Vespa walked down the boardwalk on one of Papaya Island's many beaches, taking in all of the sights and sounds of the place. She was clad in a long dress that went past her knees with long sleeves nearly covering her hands completely. This simple disguise was meant to hide the parts of her body that clearly identified her as an android. She carefully studied each face that passed her by. Couples, families, stall workers would all be stared at by the machine, who would typically respond by either trying to ignore her, or giving her a nervous wave. There were those who were too wrapped up in their own business to notice an odd girl staring at them, however, and Vespa noticed that they all had big smiles plastered on their faces. Some were also laughing. What odd behavior.
"Hey, hey miss!" The deep, booming voice of one of the many men running the stalls called out to her, causing Vespa to turn towards his. Her expression did not change from its usual neutral appearance as she spoke to him.
"Are you referring to me?" She spoke with a cold and mechanical tone. The man nodded with enthusiasm.
"Of course! Would you like to sign up for our target shooting competition? We still need a few more contestants." He gestured to his stall, where several paper targets were plastered against the wall at the end of a long range.
"What use is there in eliminating paper targets? You cannot ransom them, extort them, or kill them. It is pointless." Vespa turned to leave, but the man spoke again.
"You're one weird girl. I guess the point would be to just have fun, y'know?" At this, Vespa turned back towards him.
"Fun?" She had never heard the term before.
"What is fun?" This weird girl seemed to amuse the stall's owner, because he laughed heartily at what she said.
"What? You expect me to believe a kid like you has never had fun before?" He gestured to his stall again.
"Why don't ya sign up and find out what it's all about? First place gets their pick of a whole wall of prizes." Vespa considered her options. This task aligned with her secondary objective of learning to integrate among normal people to assist in infiltration. That being the case, doing this might get her one step closer to completing that mission. She didn't care about the prize, but she would prove the superiority of her design and learn more about this "fun" that the man was talking about.
"Affirmative. Sign me up for this... "competition." I will not lose." The man clapped his hands happily.
"That's the spirit! Feel free to practice before the games start." Vespa would take him up on this offer. It would give her a further edge over her competitors if she had the opportunity to fine tune her approach before the competition began. She walked over to one of the various stalls, noting the presence of what appeared to be a long rifle leaning against the wall. However, it was modified to fire simulated ammunition only. How very inefficient. Vespa decided that she would use her own gear. The android held her fingers out straight and crossed her arms over her chest, preparing her combat mode with a red glow of her eyes. With a "click," the built-in firearms in her fingers were loaded. The heads up display that comprised her vision targeted the dead center of each target at the end of the range. The android raised her hands to chest level, arms extended and fingers pointed straight at her quarry at the end of the range.
"Targets acquired. Engaging." No sooner did the words leave her mouth, the android fired on the targets with a volley of automatic gunfire. The stall's owner and the surrounding patrons of the boardwalk were taken by surprise by the sudden commotion. Some immediately panicked and ran away from the scene, others were frozen in fear, but the stall's owner raised his fist, his face turning bright red as he tried to scream over the gunfire for her to stop. After a few seconds, she would, but only after all of the paper targets were torn to shreds along with a large portion of the wooden wall that they were once pinned to. Vespa nodded to herself when it was confirmed on her HUD that all five paper targets were eliminated.
"All targets neutralized. Mission accomplished." At this point, most of the surrounding crowd had dispersed out of confusion, fear, panic, or all three.
