The city was abuzz.
In the last few months, things had certainly changed on the war-stricken world. First, said war was over, and before they could even begin to move on to other things, a Super Saiyan appeared. Then another. Crowns changed hands and royal lines denounced the old ways. Some had even gone as far as to pledge loyalty to Lottus ‘the new god’ in the few minutes he was alive, before suddenly rescinding the statement when he was a charred corpse.
Taori’s return to the throne came with mixed results. Most didn’t seem to mind, and a select few distinctly disagreed with his supposed cowardice. Those doubters didn’t much seem to mind at all, however, when word spread that he too became an owner of the golden hue.
As Vocado stood patiently in the spaceport, backed by a dozen royal guard, he thought back to the time after the battle. His mind was muddled, then; plagued by doubt and fear and all those other things that make a soldier bad at his job. Super Saiyans were real! And not only was he not one, both of his old comrades had earned it.
Was it jealousy he held? No, perhaps concern. A Saiyan’s deadliest foe was themself. Making the two strongest of them reside on opposite sides was a recipe for disaster.
There were rumors, and even video evidence, that Lottus himself was at the tournament, too. Vocado didn’t want to believe it, but it was hard to deny the truth. Hopefully Taori could quell the fear.
Regardless of all that, Vocado had a job to do first. Taori’s return was well-attended, and as such potential opportunities arose. Assassins, failures though they’d be, were surely hiding among the crowd that now swarmed the space port.
A gold-hued carpet was rolled out, with Vocado standing at the end of it. He stood wide-stanced, his hands interlocked behind his back as his cape billowed in the wind. In the distance, a ship was coming into view, and the murmuring crowd fell eerily silent. Was it Taori? A decoy ship? They’d know soon enough.
As the moments passed, the sudden realization that this would be his first conversation with his old partner in nearly a year dawned on him. Hopefully things would go well.
