Fixing Action Threads' Issues
I wrote a 900 word post, and ProBoards gave me an error upon posting and made me lose it all. So this time I will get more to the point.
A lot of people have complained about the way Carnages work. This is all because of two reasons: the timer to join is too long, at 72 hours, and there are no requirements whatsoever to join a Carnage, even if all attackers Stealth Drove to the attack location without anyone knowing about it. The attackers are almost always villains, which are already in much smaller numbers compared to heroes, and they cannot compensate that difference with power, because of the Malus system.
What ends up happening repeatedly is the villains get overwhelmed and defeated by the sheer numbers of the defenders, making so the chance of winning any Carnage as the attackers becomes a far stretch. This issue has been so well-known by the community there are even memes about it, and players have already told me before their lack of desire to join Carnages again, because of it. This is why I propose two fixes, which can be implemented separately, or simultaneously:
- Lower the time frame to 48 hours.
- Make Carnages have the same restrictions for joining as Conquest, except characters with any of the attacked planet's boards as Home Region can join it, instead of just those who have that specific board as Home Region.
The second option is certainly better than the first, but I think either would help mend, if not outright fix the problem so many players have.
As for AT locking, it is a highly controversial system that tries to keep consistency and coherence to the RP's lore by preventing characters in ATs from starting other threads, since the status quo of their character or the region could change drastically. However, this has the negative side effect of almost killing the flow of threads and stories in the game when there are multiple ATs at once.
It can be painful for players such as me, that only have one character, to have to sit there for weeks on end, unable to write anything anywhere because the ATs take so long to progress. It is especially brutal to new players, who already have a difficult time finding players to thread with normally, and will find a barren wasteland of opportunities in those times.
Recently, one of the new players, who had just joined the Mazoku Hoken faction, left the game, most likely because of a lack of threads when they were just starting to play, since almost the entire faction was AT locked at the time. In regular circumstances, nothing is stopping players from writing stories between their characters that took place days, weeks, months, or even years in the past. So my suggestion is quite simple: Allow for characters locked in the AT to continue making threads, so long as it is made clear those threads take place BEFORE they had joined the AT in the timeline. That should fix the issue quite easily.
I believe these 2 solutions to the problems that plague ATs will be beneficial for the entire community's health, both for those in the ATs, and for those outside them.
