“Well we’re not going to be used anymore by that half-breed cuggghh!”
Jagaimo hadn’t really been sure what side she was on until those words left the Saiyans mouth and her fist connected with his face. She hadn’t planned to hit him that hard but she was far stronger than she used to be a few weeks ago and the impact sent her heavier target crashing over the bar top and into the wall behind it, striking it with a thud before sliding down and out of sight with a groan. She wasn’t a royalist by a long shot and certainly didn’t believe in any divine right to rule like some cultures. She was however loyal and half-breed Saiyan or not Rosemary had earned the right to rule them by their own laws, every trial by combat and challenge to her claim had been overcome and every matter that was brought before her dealt with one way or another. It didn’t matter that she had mysteriously vanished on the eve of a great battle. She had been their Queen and Jagaimo wouldn’t hear the Low Class grumbling now just because she’d disappeared. Their lot had always been to follow the strong and nothing was going to change that now.
But it wasn’t just strength they needed anymore...the more races they encountered...the further they spread...just being strong at the top wasn’t going to keep the Saiyan’s powerful as a race...sure they’re leaders might survive...but what about their race as a whole...one powerful person at the lead didn’t make all the followers any stronger...that took more work...that took training and experience...
She’d heard murmurs that a new power had ascended the throne now to fill the vacuum left by the Queen’s departure but as yet she hadn’t heard much more than that but if they were strong enough to take the throne and smart enough to keep it, then by rights they were strong enough to lead the Saiyans. The man she’d knocked across the room groaned behind the bar and his friends looked wary of her but still stood their ground, one or two of them wearing jewellery that marked them as Veterans or some such...Jagaimo sighed. Twice her age, cunning as hell but in many matters, no smarter than children.
She pointed to one of them, he looked almost as young as her, a fresh recruit then, and then pointed towards the man wearing a Squad Leader’s pin,
“Why do you follow him?”
The young man looked at the crack in the wall behind the bar to the young woman and back again, swallowing as if trying to work something out,
“Because he’s earned his stripes, he’s stronger than me by far…oh”
She could see the look in his eyes as the penny dropped and the look on his face changed. There were nods and a few replies, presumably from his other squad mates.
“So he’s in charge because he’s the strongest? I’m stronger than him so that makes me in charge now right?”
Jagaimo was looking at them slowly one after the other, she could sense their Ki...she knew she could take a few of them...but if they all piled in she’d be hard pushed to defend herself. Her recent training had made her stronger...but not that strong. She shook her head, the young warrior had been thinking about this a lot recently, her various brief encounters with other Saiyan's...with other races had started to make her dwell more on what they were and where they were going.
“I’m stronger than him, sure...but he’s a veteran...he’s seen countless battles...it's not just strength we should be following...there has to be more to a leader than just brute force. Sure I could lead you, but you're all likely to die. What do I know about leading warriors?”
She moved over towards the bar as a hand appeared on it and offered her own to the scowling warrior who was rising back to his feet, an apologetic look on her face when she met his eyes, helping to heave the big man over the bar top and back onto his feet. His look told her he was angry she’d gotten a cheap shot on him, but the way he moved told the young lady that he wasn’t likely to hold a grudge if she was careful with her words...
“He’s your Captain because he knows how to apply your strength best rather than just throw you into the grinder and rely on his own power to keep him safe.”
She stepped away from them, back towards the table she’d been sat at, the bar full of Saiyan’s of all ages, some were nodding in agreement, others shaking their heads...everyone...herself included had an opinion on how things should run and they were all never going to agree but she was tired of not voicing her own thoughts...she wasn’t a cadet anymore and didn’t need to keep every thought to herself all the time. She could see there were others who thought what she said made sense...while other faces in the bar talked in hushed tones with their colleagues or spoke more loudly about how strength was all they needed...had always needed.
She only hoped that whoever was on the throne now was smart enough to know that with all the monsters roaming the universe it would take more than just the power of one ruler to guide their race onwards...
