And, suddenly, the room got quiet. With the demon deciding to focus on her home life. Well, her previous home life. She'll have to be honest with him, she hasn't done such a thing in a while. And he was right to think she didn't really seem the type to come from the mountains. No, this gal was a city dweller for some years now.
"Yeah, a lot of different freshwater fish came up and down that mountain river. Salmon loved it as a breeding grounds, so we'd make it a bit of a contest... Sometimes the kids got to participate." She seemed to refer to herself here, scratching at the bottom of her chin as she thought of how to put this. She didn't really want to unload her entire life onto strangers who were, otherwise, on business talk. So the demon would get the short of it.
"Haven't been with my village in a good while, sir. Nowadays I actually work within a city. Actually, I'm more a mechanic than any fisher or martial artist." Her power didn't look to be that of any skilled martial artist, at a rough 50. Oh, but how quickly that could change. It wasn't too long ago that Nasu had challenged her and she failed to put more than a bit of effort into her aggravated attacks. It would not be long until she'd have to face he decided to pick. Pick between that menial life and working as any other average Earthling would. WC: 255 TWC: 2001
His line of questioning got a small conversation going, at least. Jackie described having fishing contests with the others from her village, including the children sometimes. She didn't specify what type, but Al assumed it involved getting the largest number. It got her thinking on something from her past, clearly. He didn't pry. That was her business to divulge on her own leisure.
She then told them that they had been living in the city for some time! She said she was a mechanic nowadays over her fishing and martial artist life. Considering Al's string of social experiences, so far, this was barely a surprise about her being a martial artist of some kind. No, what intrigued him was that she was a mechanic! Mechanics were hard to come by, especially for old vessels like his ship, the Cayenne!
"You're a mechanic," Al inquired, raising his eyebrows with a sip of his alcoholic coffee, "What type of machinery do you work on? I've been looking to hire more people familiar with older vessels. My company uses classical solar powered, double net claw trawlers to haul up large quantities of fish from the sea. If you're looking, I'm definitely hiring!"
He was being genuine about his offer! His ships always could use a tune up, and although he could repair parts with magic, it didn't exactly relax people to see that sort of raw ability... Then again, his port got ripped up weeks ago by a guy training, so maybe he was being too stingy on his ways.
He added, before she could possibly decline, "Before you ask or decline, whatever it may be going through your head, the pay comes with health benefits. Dental, accident prone, and the rest of the ten yards! Also, the pay's substantial. A lot of cash goes into making sure the old titans can stay afloat and also serve a lot like museums. So, it's both historical and functional pieces you'd be working on, if you're into that as well! There's definitely more comprehensive stuff we'd have to cover back at home base, but you can get the gist."
Jackie seemed to perk a brow as Alaistair seemed to perk up at a specific mention in her life. Her Mechanic and Engineer work was depreciated by those above her usually. And it seems the ship captain held a certain amount of respect for the profession with the way he tried selling a job to her. A quick flash of embarrassed red crawled on her face as she was not expecting this with just casual talk.
"Is that so??? Well, I mean, I'm always lookin' for commission, but a steady place might not be bad. If I were currently hurting for it, that is." She scratched at her head of hair, not sure how to really take the offer further. Benefits and all aside, she was kinda going through some things currently that took precedent over just a mild interest in working off the side of a trawler. Plus, the seas and she are not really super-duper friends. The last few trips to the islands here were by air for a reason.
"I dunno. As good as that one sounds, bud, dunno if I'm in the right of mind to be lookin' for a job like that right now. Got a lot of my plate currently." WC: 209 TWC: 2210
The offer got Jackie flush with a reddish embarrassment. Al's choice of words hit a good note! She went to even exemplify that embarrassment in the way she spoke, as well. She explained her work centering around commissions, ever so briefly mind you. She had her own steady work currently and seemed content with that. Al shrugged, waving his hand and letting orange energy flow into not just 1, but 3 precisely cut square shapes! It got the waitress with surprise, making her jump in place and yelp out, 'What in the holy- How did you do that?'
Al looked to her, putting his free hand up while the three shapes in between his fingers on his other manifested into 3 business cards, the company logo, or more importantly Alaistair's symbol, on them with some contact information. He stated, with a chuckle and a smile, "Oh, that's a fancy little trick that I paid a couple of old fellas a good amount of cash to learn! It's all a matter of sleight of hand and light tricks."
Alaistair said this statement so cleanly... And yet, to those with extensive senses, they would have sensed in this briefest moment that Al wasn't doing any sort of sleight of hand. This was actual magic! He was lying, to ease the waitress's mind and had gotten to talking briefly with her. The cards were firmly in between Al's fingers, this hand of his resting on the table. He told her he'd appreciate another cup of coffee, no alcohol spiking it this time around.
"Right, sorry about that," he finally commented, focusing back on the 3, "So, on these cards is my direct contact information. If you have questions or are looking for a job, you can contact me through there! It also has coordinates to my business's island, if you're raring to go there at some point. Now, work's always a thing we have going on at the company, which means we're always needing some form of repairs. We got our means of jury rigging up some covers and soldering holes shut, should they ever show up. However, getting someone who knows what they're doing when it comes to maintaining and improving on old school ships is always a must... Now, would you 3 want to actually see the vessel?"
His nerves were cooled. It was as if he just needed to vent out a little bit. He was offering a tour to his fishing trawler, the Cayenne! It was an opportunity before them now, and with the cards, he was even offering the Shinjin and her majin bodyguard a chance to swing by for their own inquiries.
