Blood Rubies. Magical gems that could provide a boost of power, drain the vitality of living things, and most importantly, came from the ground shining and glittering in wondrous shapes. Such wondrous treasures belonged in the claws of one worthy of their might and resistant to their magics. They belonged to Slayg.
So it was that the dragon's shadow was cast over the observation post to the mine's entrance, and the scientists and soldiers within found themselves at his mercy. Their post was destroyed and smashed apart so that Slayg could make a nest for himself from the softer and more enjoyable parts. Their vehicles and radios were smashed or burned into slag and bits of plastic. And their tools were forced to be used to uncover the mine's entrance, and dig for a few of the remaining gems. Exposure to air, sun, and living things started a chain reaction in the dormant source of the gems, and the workers found themselves flagging and fading well before they should have.
This was fine to the dragon. He cared not that the humans below him were slowly atrophying and becoming skin-and-bone husks that could barely move. He only cared that they provide him what he wanted. They delivered. Several days and nights of hard labor later, a woman wearing rags that had once identified her as a technician with chunks of hair missing stumbled up to Slayg's "throne" while carrying a bundle of some sort. As they'd all learned to do after the first "failure" to show "respect", she bowed and lowered her head so that she was staring at the ground. With arms that shook and barely held steady, she held up the bundle to the dragon.
Slayg's eyes looked down upon her, and his right wing lowered. The clawed hand at its joint took hold of the bundle with a forefinger and a thumb, raising it to his eye. His left wing moved in to unwrap the bundle, and reveal... a great, shiny, RED chunk of ruby that was as large as a human infant. Slayg's lips turned up into a sinister grin, and his tongue flashed forward as if to taste the ruby he held. Its scent... its flavor... its sensation along his whiskers and scales... It was pure victory. And nothing, not a single thing, could ever ruin this sensation.
"HAAAAAAHAAAAAAHAAAAAAA!"
