Kabe hadn't believed it when he'd heard it, in the bar. There was no way it was true, right? He'd brushed it off as just some earthling rumor, a fantastical fairy tale or tourist trap to draw in gullable spacefarers while they were trotting the globe. The kid spouting the nonsense had seemed genuine enough, but he had to be bullshitting him, right? He'd been sure that he was wasting his time.
"No fucking way!" he spat. There it fucking was!
Mount Puccino, exactly as the little shit had described it. Rivers of coffee and cocoa and milkshake ran down the mountain, curving little trenches through hills made from cake and covered in icy, slick frosting. It was like Kabe had died and gone to Heaven, looking at a place like this: delicious, sugary sweet as far as the eye could see and absolutely nothing living to be put at risk if he started feeding himself.
He was still learning energy sensing, but the hunger gnawing at his insides told him this place had life in it. Sustenance in the candycane trees, living succor to be pulled from the honeyed sap of mint-leaf yucca by the soda stream. Maybe this wouldn't just be a fun little detour, after all. If he was lucky, and if he was wild and destructive as he knew he could be, feasting on a place like this could keep his dark passenger at bay for a little while longer.
"Well, no need to fuck around." he murmured to himself as he landed, his sneakers sinking into something like icing, cinnamon scented and sticky. He dropped to his knees, scooped a handful of blue heaven shake from one stream and slurped it, before leaning down. He savored the scent of the ground for a moment, knowing the sugary tang of that living, breathing food would be gone in a moment, and he sunk his teeth into the ground.
All around him, things started to change. Icing turned clear and slick, earthy cake crumbled somewhere under the ground, shaking the hills as trees of liquorish and cinnamon and churro snapped and fell, their candied leaves dissolving as if they'd melted against his tongue; he could taste it all.
He felt his body ache at the rush of it, calories and spirit and life lustfully dragged from the land and into the vacuous pit of his gullet. It wasn't as good as something wriggling, something fighting back, but the beast in him was relishing this, and both Kabe and it were completely oblivious to their surroundings. They couldn't notice that someone was approaching them...
