How had she forgotten to place one here? It was after she’d been burned and bloodied in Central City that she even thought to craft the spell. The whole point was to be ready to protect Earth in its time of need, and by extension that meant her family. There was just one problem. Central City was so densely populated, she wasn’t sure where she could engrave the rune so that it would go undisturbed. The last thing she needed was to have the magic fizzle out or go awry and tear her in half when she tried to teleport. Morrigan wasn’t even sure that could happen, but she didn’t want to find out!
Nelle had been unhelpful when she approached him about it. Her eldest brother just didn’t understand it and ran out of patience when she asked for a patch of wet cement to leave the mark, so she opted to give him space while she looked elsewhere some time ago. She lamented not having asked Chomei if she could leave it at his dojo or the castle when she’d last seen him, as the sun had long since set and she was now made to wander through the white noise of late night masses and entertainment. She missed the woods. Extracting her robe and hood from a capsule, she wrapped herself up to ward off the cold and unwanted attention in equal amounts, taking shortcuts to distance herself from the city crowds. Although the only place she could really get out of the way was up… Which gave Morrigan pause, letting her eyes drift up the tall faces of the buildings making up the Central City skyline.
Minutes later, her silhouette contributed to the horizon atop such a skyscraper, merely hoping whomever it belonged to wouldn’t mind. She should have thought of this earlier, but what’s done was done. Producing a thick piece of paper with a myriad of cuts through its middle, she unfolded it into a square on the rooftop, weighing down the sides and corners lest it blow away. The stencil wasn’t entirely necessary for the general shape or function of her spell, but the uniformity helped her minimize mistakes on the first go around. Bending down, she placed a palm in the dead centre of the symbol, the trunk of a tree with roots at either end leading into the surrounding circle. With but a smidgen of will did the rune fill with bright white light. The neon signs on neighbouring roofs dimmed in comparison as Morrigan etched the magic script into the concrete.
That much was the easy part. Closing her eyes such that the brightness wouldn’t distract her, she took a breath and began murmuring an incantation, imbuing the spell’s effect, granting it permanence in this place. Her senses bled into the rune as the magic took hold and suddenly made her acutely aware of the city around her. The spell was designed to keep her in the know of major disturbances, but in casting it she was forced to endure all the noise in the area. It had been bad enough in West City, but this was nearly unbearable. Though she bore it without a sound for her own sake and that of what she held dear. Just a little longer was all she needed…
