APPEARANCE:
BACKGROUND:
It's not enough to be against something. You have to be for something better.
Words that initially went in one ear and directly out the other for a young and flamboyant Kaal following the inheritance of his family's esteemed legacy. After nearly thirty years of constant, unending labor, both of Kaal's parents finally chose to step down from their head positions of their military manufacturing company, Colton Enterprises. The family business itself could be traced back hundreds of years with the acclaim that they've accrued, and the Coltons themselves consisted of a strong bloodline of highly acclaimed gunsmiths and military men and women. Following the parents' announcement of retirement, both of the senior Coltons thought it best to pass the family business over to who they believed was their more than capable son, and for the most part, they were right.
In the weeks following his acquisition of the company, Kaal ran it just as well as any other businessman his age would have been able to. Numbers stayed consistent, their stock remaining steady, and the status quo was carefully and happily maintained for the most part. While some would consider it quite the ambitionless streak of activity, Kaal was more than happy with simply doing what others expected him to- leaving the bar at a reasonably acceptable height to grab at here and there. He was more interested really in being able to enjoy an upper-class status of life due to the hard yet gratifying work of both his father and mother, and so the young Kaal engorged himself on the finer things in life- never having to deal with any of the difficulties lesser fortunate people had to on a daily basis.
Despite this though, Kaal wasn't necessarily the snobbish type- on the contrary, he cared very much what people perceived of him, and even if he didn't feel like putting in the work to make his actions speak louder than his words, it was nothing a little smoke and mirrors could make up for.
So, in a bit of an unorthodox means of upping public perception, Kaal began to dive into the more philanthropic side of the business world. Holding charity events, donating to nonprofits, anything that would tilt the public word into his favor, whilst scratching that little ego itch Kaal needed every once in a while. It wasn't enough to think he was a good person, no, he needed to be told that he was a good person. And while it appeared to superficially swoon the unaware masses into his favor, those who had enough of a wit about them to look beyond the veil were all able to tell who Kaal really was behind the mask of social conscientiousness.
A spoiled brat in need of an audience for his personalized moral grandstanding.
Conflict soon arose within Kaal's company upon the realization of his true character (or lack thereof). Word began spreading, rumors began moving, and even in spite of it all, Kaal remained blissfully ignorant.
That was, until, the Mad Heran Fukushu laid chaos on East City.
It was supposed to be another charity exhibition. A photo op here, a few tear-jerking speeches there, and soon enough Kaal would be reclining at home with a fine bottle of brandy in his hand in no time flat.
Instead, what he got was a greatly needed cold dose of reality. While cruising through the bustling streets of East City in his jet-black limousine, a singular, yet world shaking explosion rocked the entire metropolis to its core. The intense stench of smoke and flame filling the streets as a cacophony of screams only added to the ensuing chaos. Stumbling outwards from what remained of his limousine, Kaal found himself amidst what looked to be a warzone. Rubble and destruction as far as his eyes could see. Crying and yelling sending shoots of pain through his mind as he attempted to wipe the blood that blurred his gaze away with a dirty, torn sleeve. His head was pounding- just what in the hell was that, and why did it have to happen to him of all people?
Looking for a way to escape, to make this all just go away, Kaal stumbled upon a sight that made the world around him immediately melt away. From high up on one of the structures that struggled to remain standing after the initial impact of Fukushu's first blow, Kaal could glean the sight of something- no, someone, hanging on for dear life.
Adrenaline pumping in his veins, the blond rushed as fast as he could to try and do something, anything to help- only for the falling form of the person in need to meet his gaze as he approached from afar. His heart dropping as their lifeless form was the next thing to meet his gaze as he finally, regretfully, closed the distance.
The only thing Kaal could remember was clutching the person's body close to his chest as he struggled to find his way out from the immediate danger zone, and being ushered away as soon as he was discovered by emergency personnel.
He never knew the pain of loss so fiercely as it came to him that day. His once proud and supercilious visage becoming stained with both the blood and the shame he felt. Kaal thought that what he had been doing was "helping" people, but on that day, the young man realized he hadn't been doing anything of worth at all. His ill-repute and superficiality suddenly being outed for him to see in all its terrible entirety. After this realization, Kaal began to withdraw entirely from the public consciousness, the company head living for a time in ignominy and reclusion. Hiding away in his office and refusing to have anything to do with the public eye as he drowned his sorrows out in shadow and drink.
But, after months of circling back and forth through pity, disgrace, and dismay, something else began to rouse itself deep within Kaal's psyche. A want, no, a need to redeem himself- with whatever time he had left.
People less fortunate than he, people who were greater in strength and resourcefulness than he, people who were actually heroes, they were all still on the frontlines- fighting to make amends and to make things right in a world full of every wrong imaginable. What right did he have to stop trying to do the same, especially after how little he had been doing in the first place?
After tearing himself away from the comfort of his company office, Kaal began to mobilize every resource he had available to him in order to begin building the road toward what he believed was proper reparations. Not just for what he had done, but also to build toward something greater- to ensure people were truly being helped, and not just superficially bandaged for the cameras and the spotlight. Aiding in recovery efforts post alien attacks, doubling the company's production rate in order to help future defenses against interstellar threats are bolstered, and even beginning a venture into politics were all tools that were only building toward his true objective.
He had seen firsthand what happens when people are neglected in light of such devastating attacks. And while he did not blame the ones with true strength entirely for their lack of care over them during such crises, that did not stop there being a niche yet all the more important need for someone to fulfill.
And therein laid what Kaal thought was his only chance.
A chance to be better.
So, taking his parents' words to heart, Kaal began to work on the final piece to his puzzle of vindication, using his position as head of one of the world's most technologically advanced weapons companies to begin building what truly would be the magnum opus of his family name. Very few people were let in on this secret project, and even fewer knew exactly what it was for, and why it was greenlit in the first place.
But that didn't matter to Kaal. All that mattered to him now?
Was being for something better.
