Gandigan and Tarron had begun their journey to produce a potion that would help Gandigan return to life. The old Mazoku held nothing back when revealing to Gandigan how arduous their journey might be, and how long it would take to actually produce the potion. Ever actually collecting the ingredients the actual brewing period could take months before it was properly ready. Tarron told Gandigan several times over that this would be by far the most complicated mixture that either of the two Namekians had ever created before.
As Gandigan had found out earlier, Tarron was an avid alchemist just as Remin was, though the Warrior focused his craft mainly on producing poisons whereas Tarron preferred making potions that you were supposed to consume. He had cultivated quite the garden for himself, though according to the Mazoku his own supplies were quite incomplete in regards to this newest potion they were set to create, and they would have to travel very far and wide if they wanted to gather every ingredient they'd need. Gandigan had plenty of time so that was no problem to him.
From Gandigan's point of view, finding a Shinjin who was actually willing to give up his spirit to the Namekian would be just as big an issue as creating this potion, but Tarron disagreed. For some reason the elder Mazoku didn't think that'd be so difficult, and expected that one of his friends from Kaeru's circle would be willing to do so, though in spite of that he also forbid Gandigan from mentioning it, as he explained there was no point in asking one of them to make the sacrifice until they actually knew it was possible with a working elixir.
Gandigan could understand the reasoning their and agreed to keep things quiet on his end until they actually had something to produce to them. When Tarron had gave Gandigan the list of that they would need to produce this Elixir of Life... well, that's when he came to realize just what sort of undertaking he had agreed to do. There were a dozen different items on here of which he recognized very few, though thankfully Tarron had already noted down a few places to look in order to get them. If he didn't know any better he might say that the old Mazoku had this thing prepared for a while.
Gandigan managed to track down a good deal of them on his own, traveling to some of the places throughout both Heaven and Hell that he already knew of. A vine taken from one of the trees found in the Bramble Woods, or some specially fermented ash taken from the highest peak in the Ashen Mountains. Those were the easy things to get a hold of; some of the others? They were a real pain. The worse that he did on his own required him negotiate for over seven hours with one of the merchants in the Devil's Hideaway just to get his hands on some nectar from a underground glow-bug that went extinct a few decades earlier.
But by the end of his own adventures there were still three items that remained on his list; three items that he knew he had little chance of getting himself. So with the other items in hand he returned back to Tarron he took hold of his inventory and placed them within his home for safe keeping. When Gandigan handed the list back to the elder Mazoku he looked over the items that Gandigan had left, before letting out a heavy sigh. "Well, this isn't a surprise. I expected these ones would stump you."
The three ingredients remaining on the list were as follows: Alkahest, which was among the most powerful solvents known in the universe. It would be able to tear away at the outer level of the soul, allowing the two Namekians to empower it. Second was Green Vitriol, which would be used as a part of the growth process and allow the spirit to grow in power, which would help it fit into Gandigan. The final ingredient was Tilium, which Gandigan did actually know of. The problem was that the world he had gathered it from last time was now out, with the only flower there haven been picked clean.
"I suppose we should probably go after the easiest first, hmm? That would be Alkahest. Down in the mortal realm I expect there would be a few places where it is kept that we could go to, but up here? Not that many alchemists up here, so not much use for it. But there is one that I know of who might have some in supply. Take my hand." Gandigan did as Tarron asked, placing his hand inside of the elder Mazoku's before the two were teleported away to a brand new world.
The world itself looked a far cry from most of the planets he had been to while in other world. Most of those worlds with lush and full of greens and blues, but here there was naught but reds and yellows. It was a harsh land, and made Gandigan feel eager to be done with their business. "Now, when I said I may know of one who keeps Alkahest in a heavy supply, I should warn you that he won't be eager to part with it. You'll understand once I introduce the two of you."
Gandigan had already figured out that Tarron was the type of guy who liked to play games with people; it was his way of having fun. At first it annoyed the Mazoku who, but he had come to realize that being dead for as long as he was, it was probably just his way of staying sane. From what he understood souls were supposed to be recycled and reincarnated... which made Gandigan wonder as to why these Namekians were still up here. Had they done something wrong? Something he should be worried about?
Gandigan had only just first heard about the concept of reincarnation from the Shinjin Karach; before then he had assumed that souls would simply stay up here forever, and based on some of his interactions with the aforementioned Namekian it would seem as though that was the case. Now that he knew that souls would eventually be put back into the living he had been racking his brain trying to figure out why they were still here. It may have been something as simple as it not being their time yet, but Gandigan couldn't help but feel there was more to it than that.
The next time he spoke to them he would be sure to ask them, though whether or not they would give a truthful answer was still up in the air. For the meanwhile he focused on ingredient collection with Tarron, which was going not so great. The planet was hot, and Gandigan only realized just how hot it was after they had walked for about an hour. Tarron, just like Cello, didn't know how to fly, which showed just how isolated their clan was used to living. The people of the hex fist apparently didn't need it.
But unlike Cello he was unable to keep up with any great leaping ability, which meant that Gandigan was forced to walk. Considering that Namek had multiple suns and was always hot, the fact that Gandigan could feel himself sweating like he had never sweat before was a pretty bad sign. Tarron for his part seemed to be handling things much better; maybe some sort of magic was in play? He might have asked, but his mouth was so dry he probably wouldn't even be able to get the words out if he tried.
Eventually the two would come across a small river that looked as though it was on the brink of death, but it had just enough water for the two to enjoy. Despite his advanced age Tarron was very spry and didn't let the environment hold him back at all. It was getting to the point where Gandigan felt he had no choice but to ask how. "You must tell me Tarron: How is that you're able to move so easily? Don't you feel this blasted heat coming down upon us? I feel as though I've walked a thousand miles today yet it can't be more than a couple by now."
The old Mazoku laughed before getting back to his feet, offering out a hand for Gandigan to take. "I must tell you nothing, Gandigan. Now come on; we're almost there." The two continued on for a little while longer before entering into a cave entrance built into a massive cliff face that was near hidden by the foliage that had grown around it. Once they were inside Tarron raised his hand, causing the Mazoku to stop in his tracks. "Let's keep things quiet in here. We have a very shy host waiting for us."
Gandigan followed Tarron's example by slowing his pace, basically tiptoeing deeper into the cave behind Tarron's lead. The beginning of the cave looked fairly standard, with no signs of life in a cold, stony passageway that was lit up by the natural light of the planet. The deeper into the cave they got, the stranger things became as Gandigan begin to notice the various lifeforms that called this planet home. In the beginning it was just simple bugs along the walls, but further in and those bugs became much, much bigger.
Soon enough there were beetles walking along the walls that were the size of Gandigan's head, and between their feet ran worms that would have passed for pythons back on Earth. The sight of them made the Namekian feel ill, but Tarron remained steadfast in his approach and so Gandigan pushed on. About ten minutes of delving into the depths of this planet and the ever tightening cave would soon explode in size, revealing some sort of underground city, though it looked to have been abandoned some time ago.
"They save a whole civilization used to live down here. That would have been... oh, I don't know, a few thousand years ago maybe? It was well before my time anyway. Not exactly sure what the whole story was, but I've pieced together a few details from some of what they've left behind. I've been here a few times now; sometimes to collect things, and other times just to relax. No other person has been done here in quite some time... except for you too now. Not that much further to go now."
Gandigan had another question that he just had to ask. "These creatures down here; are they all dead too?" Tarron laughed. "You see halos above their heads? No everything in the otherworld is dead, Gandigan. There are some creatures native to otherworld like the ones you see now. Think of the Demons or Ogres down in Hell; are they all dead? No." Gandigan hadn't really thought of it like that before, but it did make a lot of sense. Wouldn't really be fair to the Demons or Shinjin to be born dead now would it?
In order to actually get down into the old city, the two Namekians were required to climb down a rope ladder which had been set up by Tarron on one of his earlier trips. "Mind your footing now; this baby is close to a century old now and probably needs replacing... I'll get on that one day." Gandigan was slow to descend, carefully measuring the weight he placed down which each foot until finally reaching the bottom where the city began. Once again Tarron would take the lead as the descended into the ghost town ahead.
"Like I said before: no other person aside from else has been here since at least the time that I discovered the place. I told you that our host is a bit prickly, right?" By now Gandigan had already figured out that the one they would be meeting was no person at all, but then what was Tarron talking about? "You know you could fill me in on these things, old man. I might be of a little more help to you if I wasn't being left in the dark. What is it that I should be looking for right no--"
Gandigan was interrupted by a hissing sound, following shortly after by a charge. From his right leapt a massive centipede who's pincers were aimed right for his throat. The Mazoku stumbled back before raising out his right arm and firing off a Ki blast that took the creature's head off. Tarron basically spent the whole encounter laughing before walking over to Gandigan and helping him up. "Well, not him. Don't worry about looking for anything; you just keep an eye out for any more of those bastards while I look for the goods."
There was a lot Gandigan could have said in response to that, but he kept his mouth shut. Tarron knew this place better than he ever would, and maybe it was just better if he did as the old Namekian said. The two continued on like that, with a new beast attacking every now and then only to be beaten off by Gandigan. The search continued on for another twenty or so minutes at which point Tarron entered into one of the homes, before walking over to a chest that was kept away in one of the corners.
"Please tell me that the Alkahest is in there?" Tarron shock his head, before bending over to pick the chest up. Underneath the chest was a small hole which was pitch black; Gandigan tried to send a small ball of light through, but it went on so long that the light died out before he was able to see the end. "I don't get it?" Tarron knelt down and reach into one of his pockets, before pulling out a small bell. "A few years ago I found out that they respond to certain sounds like the one I'm about to make."
They? Before Gandigan could even ask Tarron reached into the hole and shook the bell. Almost instantly the ground would begin to shake in tandem, before Tarron pointed back over to the chest. "Gandigan! We're gonna need that!" What? Gandigan looked back down into the hole and saw a torrent of small larvae like creature wriggling towards him. If would have been cute if there weren't about a million more following along behind. Gandigan quickly took hold of the chest and waited for more instructions.
"What the Hell are you waiting for Idiot? Open the damned thing and plug that hole!" Gandigan looked down at the hole in the earth, now swarming with larvae that threatening to overrun them. Gandigan pulled open the chest and dived on top, doing his best to hold the creatures at bay. Even with all his might he could feel himself being pushed back, until finally Tarron decided to pitch in and cast some sort of barrier around him which help to keep everything in place.
"Alright. You feeling better? Now go ahead and close that baby up. They should be nice and tired now." Gandigan did as he was instructed, pulling the chest back and quickly closing the lid, sitting on top of it to make sure it stayed shut. Even then he could still feel the little buggers rolling around underneath him. Looking back over to the hole Gandigan could see the others scuttling away now. "Damn. These little freaks still going? Guess we'll need to wait a little bit then."
Gandigan took another look down at the wriggling chest beneath him. "You mean this is where we're going to get the Alkahest from?" Tarron nodded. "Aye." The old Mazoku took a seat across from Gandigan in one of the chairs that remained. The thing looked about as tattered as everything else down here, though it was able to hold Tarron's weight. The old Mazoku reached across to a bookshelf and took from it the only book that remained, before placing it down on his lap and opening it up.
"Probably going to be a little while before they finally calm down. Want me to tell you a bit about the people who lived here? Obviously I don't know everything, but like I said before I've picked up a few things here and there." Judging by just how much the chest beneath him was still moving around Gandigan had to agree that they were probably going to be here for some time, and it's not like he had anything better to do. "Sure. Anything interested about these folks? Why'd they choose to live underground like this?"
A few Mazoku tribes choose to live beneath the Earth, but Gandigan had very little experience with their kind. But what he did know is that the conditions on the surface were often times better than what they had underground; was the same true here? "Well, best as I can tell is that the supply of water was much better down here. Not sure if you saw it when we first came in but near the north edge there's a pretty big lake. Nowadays it's filled with... well, you can probably imagine, but you remember that river topside? As good as it gets up there."
Ah. Now that was something even a Namekian could understand. Most living creatures needed water to survive, though if that's what they were after then like the other denizens they were probably still living as well, or at least as much as a native of this place could live. The lives and Shinjin and Oni were still a bit confusing to Gandigan; they weren't dead, but they were born and mostly lived in the otherworld? It wasn't easy for him to wrap his head around.
"Anyway... aside from that, the people here did seem to be alive... though alive in the same way that you would consider Shinjin or Oni to be alive of course. I would have assumed they came here afterwards, but their drawings of themselves suggest that they were already here. They may have even been here first."
Gandigan could hardly believe. Who'd want to actually live among these sorts of beasts? Namek had some wild fauna sure, but that was a whole planet. If you didn't like where you were you could move away easily enough. In any case, as Tarron continued to speak the chest began to die down, causing the old Mazoku to get up and gesture Gandigan off. He opened up the chest and grabbed hold of one of the larvae, lifting it up and placing it over a small flask.
There he gave the creature a small massage, which caused it to ooze out some sort of unidentified liquid. Once the first example was over he handed over a box of flasks to Gandigan and gestured over to the box. "Well? We're gonna be here for a while."
As Gandigan had found out earlier, Tarron was an avid alchemist just as Remin was, though the Warrior focused his craft mainly on producing poisons whereas Tarron preferred making potions that you were supposed to consume.
