Deep in the heart of the Kaiju Jungle lay a volcano that Sen had yet to visit. He hadn't had any reason to pay a visit to it in the past, but now? Now he had something special in mind. After his encounter with the monstrous Saiyan and the fiery Earthling Sen had come to realize just how over matched he was, and was looking to get any sort of advantage he could in battle. Recently he had been working on producing some sort of substance which could tear through armor with ease, which is where he got this newest idea.
The magma found within a volcano burned so hot that it should, in theory, tear through even the strongest of materials. If he could find a way to contain the magma in it's molten form he could potentially create some sort of weapon that could fire the substance. Now all he needed to do was collect a few samples and take them back to his lab.
Arriving at the base of the Volcano, Sen began to feel the heat. He had brought some protective gear along with him, but that could only do so much. He had to pause for a moment before taking his first steps up the Volcano, hoping with each one that the vials he brought with him were survive. "Here goes nothing..."
The Kaiju Jungle was full of natural wonders that elicited a myriad of different responses from those bearing witness to their primal magnificence. One such monolith of primeval strength that filled common folks with both awe and dread was the Kiwi Volcano housing the vilest predators that the jungle had to offer. Once more, Xiaolan made his way to the flaming colossus' apex, defeating his fanged and scaled pursuers by eluding or subduing them with the Way of the Void, his one true muse.
Not too long ago of after escaping from Jackie with Mister Megis' remains, Xiaolan also made the pilgrimage to reach Kiwi Volcano's apex. It is before the scalding confluence of lava hazing the air and forcing the fox to encapsulate his own body with a protective aura of green ki to survive that he invented a new defensive technique inspired from the sun monk's own style.
"Way of the Void: Firebrand Defense!" Xiaolan exclaimed himself, elegantly dancing across the volcanic rock with his bare soles who didn't seem to mind the rocky sharpness he was gliding on. As he waltzed for no one but himself, the fox gently rotated his open palms around his torso. Embers of jade green burgeoned from his clawed fingertips during the motion, spreading to his hands before reaching his forearms. Then, the flames leapt out from his limbs, guided by their circular momentum to spiral in front of the fox to create an ephemeral barrier of flames.
Once the fireworks died out, Xiaolan hunched his body over and propped his palms against his knees. With hectic pants, the fox wiped the sweat off his brow. Even though the workout really felt intense, rehearsing the Firebrand Defense atop the Kiwi Volcano felt appropriate given the technique's origins; if Xiaolan wanted to defeat Jackie, he had to get accustomed to such extreme temperatures.
"?!?!" Xiaolan felt something, a power level he wasn't familiar with. With a twitch from his red-tipped ears, the fox leapt off from a cliff toward this peculiar signature a tad above his own, stopping himself a few inches off the ground with his levitating prowess to end up right in front of Sen. All smiles with a arm folded behind his back, the fox waved at the Tuffle, unaware of his intentions. "Howdy! I take you are a scientist from the paraphernalia, yes? These parts are very dangerous, populated with monsters! Seeing your energy level, however, they shouldn't cause an issue. Still, I figured telling you was the neighborly thing to do." Who was this weird vulpine man? Why in the hell was his changpao not set ablaze by the ambient temperature? After observations, the fox did have quite a strange, almost radioactive-like green glow surrounding his figure. Provided Sen was able to sense such things, he'd also notice a clear lack of energy signature from the vulpine, almost as if his presence was a void in the universe... or he was clinically dead.

Sen took things nice and easy at first, putting one step after the other and keeping a slow pace. He expected to arrive at the top within the next thirty or so minutes; what he didn't expect was company. Leaping out from above came a creature that he could only describe as a fox, who had apparently been within the volcano itself. How? And why? Even with his own protective gear the heat from outside the mountain had been difficult for Sen to deal with; had this creature really somehow survived within?
If Sen had known there would be others around he would have put on a disguise. In this case 'Beke' made the most sense as it was his go to for a scientist persona. But now? Now he had to think on his feet. "Yes, that's right. My name is Saka, and I'm here to collect samples from the volcano... we've heard reports that an eruption might be taking place soon, so I've come to test a few things to try and confirm our theories."
If he knew that others would be around he also would have disguised his power level, though it was a little too late for that now. "You... fox? You were inside of the volcano? Without any protective gear? How did you survive that?"
Not wanting to touch the man's suit out of fear of burning it, Xiaolan settled for a polite bow instead of offering his hand for a handshake. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mister Saka! My name is Xiaolan." The fox straightened his posture, displaying a charming grin while walking forward on the path with his arms crossed, expecting the scientist to follow him instead of standing still.
"A volcanic eruption?!?! That would be an environmental disaster of disastrous proportions! On the flip side, probably profitable for Papayan farmers who'd come to harvest the ashes in the aftermath, but the crux of the issue lies in the Jungle's biodiversity." Despite his enthusiasm and surface knowledge, Xiaolan hardly bought the stranger's story; usually, a whole team of geologists would be dispatched for such an event. Instead of jumping to conclusions, however, the fox preferred to give that Saka guy the benefit of the doubt. Indeed, extraordinary circumstances urged extraordinary solutions and maybe sending one powerful individual was the decision taken by the government to deal with this environmental issue that Xiaolan had yet to sense.
Xiaolan was quick at providing Sen with an answer to why exactly he had yet to combust. "Ah! This is simple, Mister Saka. You see, yours truly is a martial artist, an adept practitioner of a style called the Way of the Void who I may or may not be the inventor of." From his upbeat tone tinged with noticeable pride, it was clear that whatever Xiaolan was talking about was one of his deepest passions. "Why I don't have specialized equipment? It is related to my martial arts: Through a precise control over one's own spiritual energy -or ki, if you prefer- the practitioner can surround themselves with it. Envision it like a protective, intangible cloak." Not the most scientifically sound of explanations, but the fox spoke in earnest and Sen did see that so-called cloak dancing around Xiaolan.
"Mind if I tag along? I don't doubt that you can defend yourself, but I bet it would be preferable for you to focus on your field tests while someone else stays on the lookout for the pesky fauna." Seeing how he was dealing with someone who was ostensibly a scientist, Xiaolan tried to appeal to the individual's sense of reason by providing a logical proposition. After all, a little bit of common sense goes a long way, no?

"Profitable if they surveyed. If our initial calculations are correct, the fallout could end up reaching Papaya Island itself. As for the biodiversity... nothing will survive here, so you can knock that down to zero. In any case it's most likely a false alarm, but I'm here just in case. I hadn't realize that there would be anyone else out here. Have the local authorities not put up any warning signs? I suppose I'll have to do that myself once I'm done out here."
Sen wasn't trying to create a personality for Saka on the fly which was never an easy thing. He did his best to portray the casual geologist, but it wasn't a field that he had a lot of experience in. With that being said the Tuffle trusted in his ability to outsmart a fox. "I wish these people would take their jobs more seriously. Even if it is just a false alarm, my department was quite insistent that a real threat could be upon us soon."
Sen listened quietly to the Xiaolan's tale, trying to take in the talks of martial arts and this 'ki' that was mentioned. Sen had done plenty of hand to hand combat training before, though the talk of ki was something that he regarded as magic, and therefore something he had just a passing interest in. But upon hearing that it could be used to protect oneself against the likes of a volcano Sen became much more interested in it that he was before.
"I suppose you can come with me; having someone else who could collect samples would be nice... but, if you don't mind, could you show me this technique of yours? Even if you've done this before It would put my mind at ease knowing that you'll be fine without safety equipment."
The fur on Xiaolan's neck bristled in dread upon hearing the name of Papaya Island being mentioned. The fox swallowed hard, cringing at the thought of seeing the wildlife of his beloved homeland dying out due to great gray clouds of death looming over the tropics. "I totally forgot that the ash clouds are more often than not deadlier than the lava spewed..."
Strangely enough, Xiaolan didn't hear anything about this breaking news, but maybe it was for the best. "Well, I'm not much of a TV kind of guy, but I do listen to the radio a fair bit; they have yet to disclose any information regarding Kiwi Volcano's potential awakening. Honestly, I kinda get it! Just think about it, Mister Saka: How do people react when faced with cataclysmic news? Generally speaking, mayhem ensues with protests and looting abound." Despite the gravity of the situation, Xiaolan unironically enjoyed the grounded conversation. Indeed, it wasn't everyday that the recluse of a vulpine could enjoy a reasonable conversationalist like Sen. In a way, the fox esteemed himself lucky.
The tone of the conversation shifted to something more jovial when Sen asked Xiaolan about his technique. With gusto, the kitsune began to prattle on. "Oh, yes, I'd gladly show you how it's done once we're out of this mess! I'd need to deactivate my safety barrier to perform the technique and I'm sure someone as smart as you will figure out how this can be problematic, Mister Saka." If the Tuffle's demand was rooted in some kind of bad faith aimed to take advantage of the fox during a moment of vulnerability, then it seemed like the chirpy lad wouldn't be so easily convinced to lower his veil. "Would you believe it if I told you that the Way of the Void is partly inspired by science? Not the ki stuff, of course, but the whole hand-to-hand aspect draws heavily on ancient medicine treatises I studied in-depth; with a perfected knowledge of vitals, the practitioner can neutralize most threats with a great economy of movement and energy." This was only theoretically true, as experienced during his fights against Mister Megis and Halluc whose unique Majin physiology gave Xiaolan a hard time.

Xiaolan wasn't so eager to try his technique again as Sen would have hoped, preferring to wait until the end to show it off than right now. In that case Sen was just going to have to suffer through his presence for a little longer. "Very well, I understand. Hopefully this doesn't take too long." The foxes attempted explanation at this 'way of the void' stuff didn't much concern Sen without a practical application to view. Despite Xiaolan's insistence that it was based on science it still sounded a bit like magical mumbo jumbo to him.
"I'm sorry but I don't know a whole lot about martial arts. My own power is something uh, well it's a bit hard to explain." Sen wanted to seem more vulnerable than he was, but he needed to work on the fly to think of an explanation for the power he was outputting. "Well, it wasn't my own choice. My parents enrolled by in a program when I was very young which experimented on children. I don't want to go into the details but... well, this is the result."
Sen put on a pouty face before going on. "But I don't want to worry about that. We've got work to do. It's up to us to save Papaya Island, so let's go." The Tuffle opened up his bag and grabbed a few metallic vials which he handed over to Xiaolan. "Here. The technology behind these things go way over my head, but according to my boss they were specially crafted to capture the magma within while maintaining it's form. So, you ready to head up?"
Xiaolan lent a very attentive ear as Sen explained his upbringing to the Way of the Void master. While improvised, the recounting seemed genuine and disarming enough to draw some sympathies out of the fox. "Daw, sorry to hear that happened to you, Mister Saka." The fox scratched his chin in thought, trying to offer the Tuffle some reference point in an attempt to make him feel better about his presumed trauma. "While I'm not grown out or a vat or injected with serums, I did have to fend off for my survival; an orphan lost in the wilderness of the Papayan Jungle is as harsh as it sounds. It does harden character, though." Xiaolan nodded sagely, internally cursing whatever organization was responsible for Sen's "unfortunate circumstances".
Sen wanted to change the subject, which the fox was all for; why sulk about the past when you can be a hero in the present? "Well said, Mister Saka! That is a big responsibility on our shoulders, but I trust your expertise on the matter." The prospect of being the unspoken savior of Papaya Island made stars appear under Xiaolan's closed eyelids. For once, he was going to be something else than a infamous killer or martial artist of no renown.
With painstaking care, Xiaolan appropriated the vials, putting them under intense scrutiny as Sen explained what they were for. They looked mundane to him, but apparently they were able to contain the blistering heat of magma. A bit skeptical but willing to be open-minded, the fox acquiesced. "I see. Well, no matter who that boss of yours is, he sure has quite the insane technology at his disposal." Xiaolan took the lead, moving forth with a brisk stride. "Yup! Let's do this." He tried his best to wait for Sen, but time was of the essence right now and Xiaolan couldn't help himself but to rush ahead.
PL: 52,000 (Xiaolan is in his Base form and under the Anti Sense trait; his Ki signature is null and void!) UT used: N/A KP: 6/6 - MP: 0/6 - HP: 000/250 Resources: Antisense's Free Escape Attempt, Crane School Secrets, Vampiric
Sen's tale about his upbringing seemed to have worked, though it would be impossible to tell if the Fox really believed him or not. As long as that subject was over he was fine; he was here to work, and had already been distracted enough. The beginning of the volcano came easy enough, as he was able to walk up without too many issues. The heat was annoying, but at this point that's all it was: an annoyance, but things quicker got worse for the Tuffle from there on out.
The higher up they went, the steeper the volcano became. Sen could had flown, but wanting to portray himself as weak and vulnerable he was forced to climb instead. Under normal circumstances climbing wouldn't have been much of an issue for Sen, but given the ever increasing heat and the weight of the equipment he was carrying he was beginning to feel it now. Every now and then he'd look back over to Xiaolan to see if the Fox was up to anything. "You doing alright?"
Sen was always looking for a way to sell his stories to people, and so when he felt a bit of loose rock he wasted no time in dislodging it intentionally, producing a fall which threatened to see him tumble all the way back down. "Oh no!"
As the duo got higher and higher in altitude, so did the temperature, much to the fox's displeasure who found himself sweating bullets anew. Despite that mild discomfort making his clothes damp, ascending the steep slope ended up being a breeze for Xiaolan. The peppy lad just sorta hopped up and down, running and jumping across the quasi-vertical surface without the help of his hands through a mix of his levitating prowess and channeling some ki across his soles. Even though it wasn't his goal, it almost came off as if Xiaolan was flaunting in the face of Sen who was struggling big time.
"Yep, I'm doing just fine, Mister Saka! What about you, holding up alright?" Xiaolan got the answer to his question delivered in an unexpected manner: A cry for help! Xiaolan looked over his shoulder, his brow immediately furrowing upon seeing the ongoing accident. Not wanting the one man who could save Papaya Island to end up in a wheelchair or worse, Xiaolan rushed to the rescue, plunging down at an alarming speed making the wind howl to get past Sen. All that the Tuffle felt was a light push on his back nudging him back to safety.
"There, you should be all set and ready to go..." Xiaolan crossed his arms, feeling that something was a bit off. Call it a hunch or whatever, but wouldn't Sen be able to fly with that energy signature of his? "Heh, strong like you are, I expected you to be able to jump REAL high or be capable of flight. I can carry you, if you want." Xiaolan waited a few seconds to see the Tuffle's reaction before covering his maw with a paw to muffle a chuckle. "Just messing with you, Mister Saka~ Don't you worry, though, for Xiaolan will be watching over you from now on!" The fox did as advertised, keeping himself aloft with his arms crossed behind his head and his legs folded together in a nonchalant fashion, effectively "lying down" in the air at roughly equivalent level to Sen. If the climb was going to take that long, then why not make himself comfortable to watch over the scientist?

Being a natural paranoid and suspicious man, Sen had to question how Xiaolan was actually doing. The fact that the Fox could survive at all in these sort of conditions without any safety gear was proof enough that it's magical techniques did have some validity to them, but if he were capable of lying then so was Xiaolan. If the Fox was telling the truth and he was really doing just fine then learning this defensive technique was going to be a big priority for Sen moving forward. So many new environments could be explored with that sort of power.
His fall had achieved it's goal of making himself look weak, as Xiaolan quickly moved to catch the falling the Tuffle. "Flying? Oh I wish. But I'm no good with or anything like that. It would make things a lot easier here but alas, I must continue to climb I must train my body so that if this sort of thing happens again I can be prepared in the future. Though if all goes well here then perhaps you can teach me to fly as well."
Sen put his hands back onto the volcano and continued his slow ascent, occasionally looking back to see if Xiaolan was still there. Once the crater became visible Sen stopped and took out a device with a number of different radars and modules on it. Sen liked to call it the 'confuser' as that's all it really did: trick people into thinking he was actually doing something. Sen tapped a buttons and pulled a lever on the side of the confuser before holding it up into the air.
"Oh no... that's no good at all. No; not liking this ready one bit. Things may be worse than I thought here..."
Sen's words invigorated Xiaolan with a newfound sense of purpose. Out of nowhere, the fox broke his lazy posture, flipping himself upside down while propping his chin up against his palms and dangling his legs excitedly. This time, the conical hat was prevented from falling by a string Xiaolan added to his headwear after many fighting-related incidents involving it. "Reaaaaaaally? You'd like for yours truly to teach you how to fly, Mister Saka? Heh, keep this curiosity of yours up and I might just end up making you my disciple." Unless he was a VERY good actor, there was no way the kitsune was faking this excitement with the childlike chime present in his voice; the fox was buying into the Tuffle's fake persona more and more.
"You'll see! Learning the ropes of flight is not that hard once you got the basis of ki down, but perfecting the technique is a constant ordeal." The fox explained, holding up a single index. When the crater became visible and Sen whipped out his McNothingBurger radar, Xiaolan observed the worthless contraption with absolute bewilderment. This useless bauble worked like a charm, building up a feeling of apprehension in the fox as the Tuffle pressed buttons before pulling a lever. Poor Xiaolan almost had a heart attack when the Tuffle read the Confuser's "accurate prognostic".
"I-is it that bad?!?" Xiaolan was anxiously gnawing on his own claws. If he could do anything to prevent the volcano from erupting, he was ready to go to draconian extents. "We gotta hurry before this thing blows up on us!" Xiaolan produced the vials from his changpao's pockets, primed to jump into action. "Just tell me what I gotta do with those. I just hope I dont have to scoop the magma directly from the inferno... that would be suicidal, even with my insulation technique. No offense intended toward your boss' tech, of course."
Sen found Xiaolan's child like demeanor incredibly grating, but when working undercover you sometimes had to try and get along with people you despised, and so for the sake of the act he tried to keep things going. "Weeeell I don't know about being a disciple. I probably don't have enough time for something like that... geology is a full time job, you know, and my boss sends me all across the planet on consulting jobs, which is just another reason to learn how to fly."
The confuser did it's job perfectly, creating anxiety where there was none to be had. "Based on the electosians and frisions in the air... yes, the volcano could be set to go off withing the next day. But it could still be a false alarm. We won't know for sure until we get some direct samples from within the volcano. Let's keep going."
Sen continued the climb up, reaching the crater itself within a few minutes. From here, staring down, the heat was so intense that he could only hold his view for a few seconds before pushing back. "Agh... damn it. My boss must of cheaped out on my suit... I don't know how I'm going to get down there and last long enough to get the sample... could you go down there?" The geologist that Sen had murdered must not have been properly equipped for this kind of situation; next time he'd make his own suit.
"The vials work similar to the way that capsule technology does. You press a button then throw them down into the volcano, and the vial will scoop itself. Then once they're full a small explosion will launch them into the air. The hard part is catching them. You'll have to lean over into the crater and watch their trajectory. There's only one explosion, so if they go off and you lose track of them they could fall back in, and then we're doomed."
Xiaolan calmed down and swallowed, understanding of Sen's life situation if a bit bummed by it. He had his suspicions that a man of science with such important responsibilities didn't really have time in his schedule for such a heavy commitment, but hearing his doubts be confirmed still stung a little. "No worries! Kinda got carried away, to be honest. I apologize if I overstep some boundaries, Mister Saka. Still, I'll gladly show you these two neat tricks once we're done, especially if they can be helpful in carrying out your duty." The fox was back to a more neutral tone, smiling softly as they made their way up.
Sen disoriented Xiaolan further by smearing some technical terms that were totally outlandish to his impromptu partner in his confuser explanation. "Uh.. I see, yeah..." Who would have guessed that such a futile device could have such a great effect? All that Xiaolan really understood is that they needed the lava samples to confirm if the false alarm was, well, a false alarm.
Xiaolan stooped over the crater alongside Sen, his neon green tongue lolling out from his maw with an intense, noisy panting mirroring the effect that the scorching heat exuded by the volcano had on his body in spite of his protective ki coating. "Shit... I've never been that close to it..." Xiaolan audibly muttered, visibly intimidated by the sight, the heat he had to be subjugated to. Regardless of the screaming fear gripping his body to stiffness, the fox knew that now was not the time to chicken out. Slowly, the void master rotated his head to give Sen a foreboding nod. "Yeah... I do have a choice - my choice is to risk it all for my homeland and her people. If I die going down there, then know it was nice meeting you, Mister Saka."
On the flip side, Xiaolan was super familiar with the capsule technology, so this filled him with some level of confidence. How could this be any harder than balancing a dozen bento boxes on his head after catching them mid-air? "Got it!" The fox looked down at the vials resting in his palm, closing his fingers around them before lifting his gaze to meet Sen's eyes. He gave the Tuffle a military salute before hovering above the figurative maw of Hell.
There was a moment of hesitation, a pause; the fox placed his empty paw over his chest, feeling the hammering of his heart. Xiaolan took a deep, protracted breath, regaining his composure. With pinpoint accuracy induced by a surge of adrenaline, he pressed the buttons on the capsules and hurled them in the volcano. They became aerodynamic blurs that caused the air to screech before getting swallowed by the bubbling, deadly quagmire of the lava.
"..." The inferno began to churn. Almost immediately, Xiaolan's ears perked up. With geysers of magma that reached high, the capsules were regurgitated to its sender. Xiaolan yelped and ducked out of the way, dodging the columns of magma by a hair. Quickly, he pulled himself together, zipping to the capsules that he expertly caught, except for a single straggler who was launched in the opposite direction. Xiaolan grabbed his conical hat and threw it with a reverse grip. Whether due to his uncanny aim or insane luck, the filled vial fell inside the spinning headwear that returned to Xiaolan like a boomerang that he swiftly caught.
"I-I think that's it..." Xiaolan flew past the edges of the crater and began to descend, trying to get away from the volcano's unbearable heat. Once his bare soils touched the rocky soil of the slope, he consolidated with Sen, offering him his glowing prize. "There. Never ask me to do this again, hahahaha... phew." Xiaolan wiped his brow, clearly exhausted by the trial he just endured.

He had the fox eating out of the palm of his hand now. Why couldn't every job be this easy? "Don't worry too much. As long as you think smart and act fast you should be fine." Sen gave a thumbs up before watching as Xiaolan moved closer up to the crater. He hesitated for a moment, before throwing the vials into the magma. There they would sit for a moment before... bang! And eruption sent them flying up into the air. Xiaolan moved swiftly, taking hold of nearly all of the vials bar one which he caught with his hat.
As the fox came back down Sen offered a clap, congratulating him on his effort before taking hold of the vials and placing them back into his back. "Bravo. With these vials in hand we can really understand what's going on here. The technology should keep them in form for at least six hours and our lab is less than an hour away, so I say we have a bit of time before that for a bit of teaching, wouldn't you agree?"
Sen was still curious to see this fancy technique of Xiaolan, and hopefully it would only take one demonstration for him to pick it up himself. "What did you call it before? The way of the void or something? I'd like to see it now, if you're willing to show me."
