The night was a dark one, plenty of tension lingered in the air like a stagnant cloud. Rain peltered at the glass of the perimeter’s gatebox, in which sat the usual guard Joe, nervous as ever despite having a particular liking to an occasional late summer shower. Though there was no mistaking, he had been on edge as of late, as with many others around the Castle grounds. The tv’s colors flickered against his face over the edge of his hardback novel, the news offering the same stories, just different takes on a different night.
Since that day things got crazy around here, Joe did his best to ignore just about anything that didn’t pertain to the opening and closing of the iron he guarded in nonchalance. Many folks that came and went didn’t warrant much attention, and he rarely saw the boss himself this way. Thus was Joe often content to just collect his paycheck and return home on a regular basis, no worries about his day to day. The volume was low enough to have heard it; the less than subtle buzz of the tripped sensors, disrupting the suspenseful end to chapter fourteen with all the nuance of a nuclear bomb to Joe’s immersion.
A scowl was given to the monitors, some annoying tart was smugly waving back at him on the other end.
”Hello!? It’s me!”
A broad grin and another cheeky wave from beneath a decorative umbrella.
The guard put his book away, then went about hitting a few keystrokes on his workstation. Dossiers of the Elites soon flashed across his screen, scrolled, before his search would stop over the mugshot of a rather smug, but familiar blond girl in a witch’s hat. ”Oh, I do so love that one. Takes me back,” offer the girl softly over his shoulder. Joe would fall out of his chair as he was startled by her sudden presence, glancing from the emptied road in the monitor to where Celeste now stood over him. An amused hum before she would lean uncomfortably close to his personal space; the man would offer little more than a gulp to her devious charm.
”Anyone around?”
The guard stuttered to answer, but his murmuring was cut off.
”I’d imagine not, judging from your diligence to this evening’s security.” The witch righted her posture. ”Well I suppose I’ll be off.” The girl was gone before he could offer anything in return, her stroll across the familiar courtyard serenaded by the soft droplets against stone. The commotion of the doors to the Castle’s vestibule would reverberate through the halls beyond. Some of the aides to the King and stationed guards would cease their activities abruptly, their heads swiveling to catch a glimpse of whoever dared such an entrance. Many felt their blood still at the sight of the blond in black, her hands raised in praise to her audience.
”Ah, to be home again! It simply makes my heart swoon in nostalgia!”
The charm was dropped abruptly, with Staff of the Moon being summoned in a whorl of hallowed light to crack the marble near her boots. A malicious grin would spread across her lips, pearly whites glinting against the room’s evening glow.
”Do run and inform His Highness I’ve returned, and be quick about it!” The witch barked at the nearest aide, her tone forcing the poor girl to shy away in terror before scampering away. Celeste would watch on until another less sheepish servant to the Castle would bravely step forward with a bow, his voice failing to match his confidence. ”P-pardon the inconvenience, b-but he isn’t here right now...” The sorceress would narrow her eyes over this fool, before turning her attention to the rest of the room.
