Two figures stood in a room, currently in the middle of an argument about something or other. The first was a young man of fairly slim build and wearing a simple t-shirt/trousers combination, there was nothing else of note to his appearance besides some shockingly red hair and bright orange eyes. By all intents he passed for human. What he didn’t look like was someone ready to engage in a serious bout of physical training. He was currently pacing back and forth anxiously.
The second and shorter of the duo was an elderly woman bearing a striking resemblance to an anthropomorphised cat with greying lavender fur. She also happened to be the owner of this establishment, an odd combination of cafe and, in it’s off hours, impromptu martial arts school, most of the furniture had been moved aside, leaving an empty space in the middle of the room being illuminated by a skylight. The woman had perched herself on a chair and seemed notably more relaxed.
“But why that? Isn’t there something else I can do instead?”
“If you don’t like it, it’s not too early to quit you know?”
The man, more commonly known as Mel, or “Tarine” to no one but himself, seemed alarmed by the suggestion and quickly tried to backpedal.
“No, that’s not what I meant! I want this, but isn’t there a better way then just… beating each other up?”
“How many times do I have to say a spar isn’t about beating someone silly? This is about improving technique! At the end of the day all that’ll happen is you might get a few bruises!”
Her attempt to lighten the mood caused Tarine to pull a face, causing her in turn to take on a more stern expression.
“Look dear, you said yourself you wanted to get stronger, that you met some people that have you a little concerned? Wouldn't you rather learn with someone in an environment where you know it won't go too far? I can feel you've got plenty of potential but potential alone won't save you the next time someone thinks a city makes good target practice.”
