For all of Kombu's life, whispers traversed upon the winds across the world known as Planet Earth. Tales of wonder and whimsy. Stories of a being of immense power who watched over the globe, protecting it under their guidance for eons to keep it safe. A god. a Kami. It was rumored that such a person did not reside on the ground as everyone else did. Old stories claimed that such a being lived among the clouds, possibly in Heaven itself. As to how a mere mortal could reach said being? It was noted that the locals of Karin Village could pass along their knowledge for those who sought it out. And after spending so much time on Earth, after training his entire life, Kombu hoped that this Kami could help him learn new ways of fighting to aid him in his everlasting quest to defend the weak and the innocent.
Kombu flew just above the cloud line. The wind was frigid up at this altitude. Not quite as warm as it was closer to the ground. Being closer to the Stratosphere meant that the world's natural gas barrier had been thinned out compared to the Troposphere, where it was less capable of holding heat, resulting in the cooler temperatures. Soon, the blanket of clouds dispersed to give way to a more open sky. And it was just up ahead where Kombu spotted something that filled him with wonder and excitement.
A great pillar. One that pierced the very clouds higher up in the sky. This must be it. It had to be! The legendary stairway to Heaven that connected Kami to the world below! And looking down, the Saiyan spotted a village of sorts. Animal hide teepees were dotted across the area. All of which were surrounding the column at its base. Kombu deduced that it must be Karin Village. The flying man dipped downward and made a beeline for the village below.
Upon landing, some of the Natives stood and offered warm smiles. Some rose their hands to wave in greeting. One, sitting by the fire initially, stood up as well. A man who was much taller and broader in stature than the young Saiyan! With paint decorating his face and feathers decorating his hair silky raven hair, the man's stern expression quickly turned into a wide grin!
"Hello, traveler!" he greeted, extending a hand out to Kombu! The Saiyan quickly accepted the handshake, making his grip firm yet respectful!
"Hello!" Kombu replied with a grin of his own. "I'm Kombu. Is this Karinga Village?"
"That it is!" the burly man said with a hearty laugh! "I'm the Chief of Karinga Village. My name is Upa! And to what do me and my people owe the pleasure of your visit?"
Kombu clasped his free hand against the oversized appendage that held his right. "It's nice to meet you and your people, Upa. I've come in hopes of learning about the pillar here and where it leads. What can you tell me about it?"
Upa nodded knowingly. "Ah, you seek answers about Korin Tower. Or rather, about the Lookout above." His smile faded away into a slightly concerned frown. "But we don't know of the current state of the Kami's Lookout. We don't even know if Kami watches over these lands anymore."
Kombu's heart weighed heavy with a new sadness. "Oh. Well, I was planning to go up there. I can inform your village of my findings later, if you'd like?"
The chief of Karinga Village nodded solemnly. "While I fear the possible answer you may bring us, you would help relieve the weight on our minds to know the current fate of the Lookout and Kami. But to get to the Lookout, you cannot simply fly up to it." the burly man pointed up to the sky with his index finger. "You must climb the tower to prove you are worthy of seeing the Kami. Then, through hard work and determination, you may gain an audience with them."
The Saiyan nodded with understanding. "I see. So you can't take the easy route. You have to get there the hard way. Okay. I want to climb this sacred tower, then."
Now that Kombu had a better view of the tower, he craned his head back to stare at it as it disappeared beyond the cloud cover. Whoever built it must have been an incredible craftsman. The column itself seemed to be made of stone or marble. Intricate designs of animals and other shapes adorned it.
Upa spoke up, which drew Kombu's attention. "Very well, Kombu. I wish to aid you in your quest. I will throw you as far as I can to get a head start. But you must get up the tower the rest of the way on your own."
The Saiyan smiled gleefully. "Thank you so much, Upa! I'm ready when you are!"
With a nod, the Karinga Chief bent down to scoop Kombu up into his massive hand! He bent down and began to tighten the muscles in his legs and arm. "Here...You...GO!"
And with his mighty throw, Kombu was sent skyrocketing up the face of the tower! The wind whipped past his body that shot upwards like a missile being launched from its silo! The sheer G-force slammed against his face! Just how strong WAS that man?!
Kombu could start to feel it. His ascent was slowing down. It was time to get into action! His body gravitated closer to the column. And once close enough, he slammed his foot down on its side. The Saiyan began to sprint! He ran as hard as he could ever Heavenwards! And there was no telling when he would start to tire out! With all of his training since he was a boy, both with physical might and cardiovascular routines, this feat was entirely feasible!
Now roughly less than a quarter of the way, Kombu's speed was finally beginning to ebb. With one final kick of his legs, he leaped up a few good feet before having to grab onto the column! Beads of sweat were pouring down his body, soaking his clothes and stinging his eyes with the salty mixture. He was so close. Just a bit more!
"Almost...There!" he panted, starting with his climb. His legs were still burning with lactic acid; his arms didn't take long to tire out as well. But this Saiyan was not going to give up in the face of adversity!
"I think I can. I think I can! I know I can, I KNOW I can!"
Closer and closer, he approached a structure just above. He spotted a human-sized hole in the architecture. That was his entry!
"Just...A little...More!"
His fingers were screaming in agony! They were sore beyond all belief. And finally, after an arduous climb, Kombu hoisted himself into the interior of the tower's temple-like building. The Saiyan, now exhausted, rolled onto his back so he could catch his breath. A smile remained affixed to his face.
"I did it...I actually climbed it," he murmured through labored breaths.
He got back up after taking some time to recover. The Saiyan spotted some stairs. With curiosity getting the better of him, he decided to climb those as well despite the protests of his legs and feet. Now he had found himself in an open area with the column jutting through the middle.
"Hello?" he called out. "Kami? Are you here?"
