Some time ago, after meeting the Shinjin known as Tiamat and pledging to become her student, Kombu had contracted a deadly disease. He was left bedridden, unable to eat solid foods or train to his heart's content. As per the Doctor's advice, he remained in bed most of the time. But he was no quitter; Kombu was a natural-born fighter. He kept his hopes high and his attitude positive. Strength did not just come from the body but the mind as well.
Miraculously, Kombu was cured three months later. And now, more than ever, the Saiyan was eager to explore the cosmos and experience life to its fullest. Today was a new day, and Kombu felt like his old self again. But, first, he would have to say goodbye to his parents.
The horizon gave way to a beautiful sunrise that crept upward into the sky. Shifting in colors from red to orange and then becoming consistently more yellow as it continued to rise. The palette of the sky changed as well, from dark blues and purples to orange, and then finally the light blue which everyone on Earth had been accustomed to.
Kombu was already up, as he wanted to say goodbye before heading off into the unknown of Space. He would find his mother and father, Verna and Leak, in the kitchen. They had already prepared a grand breakfast as they knew that today was the day of their son's departure. The sweet and salty aroma permeated the air. Kombu's mouth had already turned on the waterworks.
On the table laid stacks of chocolate chip pancakes, a large bowl of corned beef hash, rice with eggs on top, egg drop soup, sticks off beef, and chicken. It was certainly a feast fit for a king and his guests.
Kombu and his parents stood outside of their home after they had finished breakfast. The three stared longingly into each other's eyes.
"How long will you be gone?" Verna asked, her voice confident yet having a slight tone of concern.
"Verna," Leak interjected calmly, "he's twenty-seven. And he's strong, too, just as we've trained him. He's going to be fine."
Kombu smiled sheepishly while rubbing the back of his neck.
"I don't know how long I'll be gone. But I'll do my best to visit every so often. I made a promise to my Master that I would meet up with her so she could continue to train me, and I could go on protecting people where help is needed. Besides. I almost died. I want to see what's out there, and experience life to the fullest."
The female Saiyan sighed in defeat as her tail twitched in slight annoyance. Then, her expression gave way to an understanding smile.
"At least it's not like the old days where Saiyans were sent as children to unknown planets. I trust you, my son. I know you'll do good out there. But!" she raised a finger, getting close to Kombu. "If you ever find yourself on the new homeworld of the Saiyans, be careful! We don't know how they'll react to you. So keep your head down if you ever find yourself there. Understand?"
Kombu nodded, then pulled both of his parents into a long, squeezing hug. "I understand. I promise."
The hug lingered for what felt like an eternity. Finally, the trio tore apart from one another. Kombu then began to walk toward the shed next to the house. He pried the door open and stared at the large object covered by a grey tarp. His hand then gripped the fabric. With a swift motion, the tarp was thrown aside. There rested one of the Battle Pods which his parents had used to come to Earth in the first place. The one that managed to survive the initial landing all those years ago.
