Alas, an incapable monarch was quite bad news. In a bad case, it could lead to the end of the dynasty. In a worst case, it could lead to democratic rule, as per the kyklos. In the worst case of all, it could lead to the dissolution of the state entirely.
For a bunch of so-called knights, neither took all that great care of their horses. Or had them.
”That is the intention.” For many tuffles, they did not need to worry about what they would do with the Vegetans once they’d win because victory seemed so far and seemed to so consistently stray even further from reach in each passing moment. But, Cheri was hopeful, and so of course she’d considered such a thing. She would not stoop to their level and kill them. No, she would seek to have enough political and military power to pressure them off-planet. ”But the Vegetans do not want to leave, for that would be to admit that they’ve lost.” A powerful warrior culture, admitting they lost to a bunch of short, weak nerds? They’d rather die a thousand deaths. ”And, after decades of strife, they have extra motivation to stay: revenge for the fallen, and the good old-fashioned sunk cost fallacy.” Of all the fields in which Cheri excelled, one of them was her understanding of the Vegetan mindset. She had hoped she could use that psychology to bring peace, but the most she’d gotten out of it was knowing how to get under her opponents’ skins.
But, next… Cheri made sure to not shift or at all express anything in her face that had not already been expressed while she considered how best to tell Azoth that the empire he described was no empire at all. ”I gathered as much, yes.” Given previous evidence, Cheri had already been able to reverse engineer and extrapolate the policies of his ‘empire’. She did not mean to express support for such policies, but a light allegiance to Arcose was not so bad (if, indeed, that was what it would end up being; she knew to be apprehensive of such ‘opportunities’). When she suggested a change in form of government, it was comparable to the aforementioned example of the prime minister of a constitutional monarchy which was often effectively the president in all but name. There was a distinction, which did very much matter in governments which had both presidents and prime ministers, but I need to finish this sentence now so I don’t get accused of padding so you should go google it yourself. ”But what you describe is no empire at all. I understand that you may want to keep such terminology so that your government may be attached to the legitimacy and prestige held by those terms, it would certainly help convince the grognards, but you should at least be honest with, say, a liberal democracy you may wish to proposition in the future.” Hint. Hint.
Meanwhile, Nasu was being himself, constantly idealistic, driven by an intricate system of honour, hopeful but realistically… Cheri smiled at this. He could be someone she depended on in times of great stress. She anticipated that he’d look to her, and made sure to look away just in time.
But, when he spoke of her, her smile became more open, in intent to be seen. ”The galaxy would get a lot better a lot sooner with more people like Nasu,” she said to Azoth but in compliment to Nasu.
