BACKGROUND: Alva's birth was an unfortunate one. Complications during the birthing process led to the death of her mother and irreparable damage to her lower spine, rendering everything below her torso immobile - her legs would forever be left limp and impossible for her to move or feel. Her father, Percy Cotto, was devastated by the loss of his wife, as well as the permanent damage Alva had sustained, but he moved on nonetheless. As a mechanical engineer, he believed from the start that Alva's legs could be fixed, and that she would be allowed to walk even if the fates themselves refused to let her.
They started when she was quite young, and from the beginning, with custom-built braces strapped to Alva's legs and attached through a complicated system of levers to her arms that would allow Alva to move her legs up and down through the movement of her elbow joints. It was... Well, it wasn't a failure, but it certainly wasn't a success. Alva quickly grew tired as a result of how much effort it took, and her arms and legs were bruised by the hard metal joints that bumped and rubbed against them.
The next attempt was when Alva was a few years older and just starting middle school, when her father had acquired a new job at the up-and-coming tech company, CURE. They boasted impressive human augmentation capabilities, and while he had initially envisioned Alva receiving implants in her body from the company, she staunchly refused any sort of enhancement that would require putting mechanical pieces inside of her body. Frankly, she didn't much care that she couldn't walk, and felt that she got around just fine without needing to use her legs. Alva told her father that her wheelchair was more than enough for her, and that he need not work so hard just for her sake.
But Alva's father was about as stubborn as she was, and determined to find a solution that would make his daughter walk. He started quietly stealing parts from CURE and taking loans to ship in parts from other places around the galaxy to work on at their home, and eventually drew Alva's curiosity enough with the mechanical parts that littered their garage in Central City for her to start working on something together with him. It wouldn't be a mechanical implant, though: it would be a suit not unlike the first one they'd tried when she was young. Only much, much better. Percy taught his daughter the ins and outs of robotics, and Alva proved herself to be quite the prodigy.
However, Percy's less-than-legal antics had started to catch up with him: he owed money, and a lot of it. And to some quite awful people, as well. Alva had had the misfortune of witnessing a debt collector quite aggressively affirm to Percy that his money was due soon, "or else." She got a job as an intern at the very same CURE Industries her father worked out to help, but a minimum wage salaried job wasn't going to be enough to help: he needed the money soon, and a lot more of it than just a few thousand zeni an hour. She knew the suit they were working on was advanced, and almost finished, and that with a few enhancements of her own, it could become more than just an overcomplicated walker: it could become the ultimate weapon.
She worked tirelessly on it in secret, her father completely unaware of her full plans for the suit as she started to refuse his help when it came to tinkering with it: she'd become more obsessed with it than he had. Alva had begun working on the suit's enhanced features when she was fifteen, and by the time she was eighteen... It was ready. A suit that allowed her not only the use of her legs, but had its own artificial intelligence, boasted weapons powerful enough to blast an entire house to rubble in an instant, and could fly. Of course, she only showed the walking part to her father, who was overjoyed, of course, but worried: if the people he owed money to found out about this, what if they took it?
Alva, on the other hand, had plans to ensure such a thing wouldn't happen. It wasn't hard to find a place that a weapon of pure destruction and awesomeness became useful. She'd happened to get in contact with the leader of a mercenary group, the kind that paid good money in exchange for violence and dirty work. The kind of money her father needed to get out of debt. And, quite frankly, Alva didn't much mind the dirty work.
