BACKGROUND: Taro-tengu was a demon born in the underworld city of Devil's Hideaway, a hotbed for violence and danger, even amongst the people of Otherworld. His parents were a pair of fiendish merchants who sold knock-off magical items to the masses. They preformed con after con, until they slipped up. A demon kingpin of sorts was eventually scammed by them, and he took retribution. Taro's parent's souls were cast into limbo as punishment, and they were lost in the endless void. The young demon was devastated, and grew up as a street urchin.
When he became old enough to fight, the young soul would enter into gladiatorial fights to earn money and food. He lost almost every bout, but would slowly learn how to fight over many years of suffering. On one faithful evening, an older demon took interest in the young blood's skills. Kaido, a potent warrior even by demon standards, would introduce himself.
"You fight like a caged beast," Kaido remarked, his voice low but commanding. "Wild, unfocused, but... there’s potential. I've been watching you."
Taro narrowed his eyes. "What do you want?"
Kaido gave a small smile, though it was more a smirk of recognition than friendliness. "To help you become more than just another demon fighting for scraps."
"Why me?" Taro asked, with a hint of suspicion.
Kaido’s gaze hardened. "Because I see more in you than you see in yourself. You fight with rage and desperation, but that won't carry you to the heights you're capable of. You’re lost, like many of us. But unlike others, you haven't succumbed to it."
Taro didn’t fully understand what Kaido meant, but he felt the weight of the older demon’s words. He had lived his entire life surrounded by violence, betrayal, and suffering, but deep inside, a part of him had always longed for something more... Something beyond the cruelty that defined the world around him.
Under Kaido's guidance, Taro would learn proper martial arts in addition to training with an assortment of different weapons. The older demon was happy with the level of understanding the young blood had. He was a quick learner, and seemed to slowly be purging the evil from his heart. After several years of training, Kaido had one final lesson for the still young demon.
“Taro,” Kaido began, his voice heavy with a tone that Taro hadn’t heard before. “There’s something you need to know. Something I’ve withheld until I believed you were ready.”
Taro, still catching his breath from their sparring, looked at his master with slight confusion. “What do you mean?”
Kaido took a step back, looking at Taro with a deep intensity. “You’ve grown strong, not just in body, but in spirit and mind. You’ve learned to control your rage and channel your power. But there’s one final lesson I must teach you, and it requires you to understand the truth about who I am.”
Taro blinked, unsure of what Kaido was getting at. “The truth? What are you talking about?”
Kaido closed his eyes for a brief moment, then opened them with a look of resolve. “I am not a demon, Taro. I never was.”
Before Taro could react, Kaido’s entire form began to shift. A powerful, radiant energy surrounded him, unlike anything Taro had ever felt before. The air crackled with divine energy as Kaido’s demonic features melted away, replaced by something far more regal. His skin became a pale lavender, and his appearance shifted into the form of a Shinjin.
Taro staggered back, his eyes wide with shock. “You… you’re a Kai?”
Kaido shook his head, his expression calm but firm. “My true name is Shinrai, and I'm only a vessel. One of the Kais tasked me with overseeing the balance between the realms. I came to the underworld, disguised as a demon, because I sensed something special in you. Something… different. You have the potential to change more than just your own fate.”
Kaido would open his arms as he proceeded to speak, "We've searched long and hard for a soul like your's, and feel you have the potential to change the evil ways of all demons... You could help bring an eternal peace."
“I… I don’t understand,” Taro said, his voice trembling. “I'm a demon, how can I bring that change!? The underworld is built on violence and corruption. No one will listen to me.”
Shinrai placed a hand on Taro’s shoulder, his touch calming the young blood. “It won’t be easy, but change never is. You’re not just a demon, Taro. You’ve grown into something more. Your strength, your heart. They can inspire others. You’ve already begun to question the ways of your kind. Now, you must lead by example.”
Taro was unsure even still, but something in him sought to fulfil the Shinjin's desires. The goal was noble, though perhaps insurmountably difficult. If he wanted to change the demon realm, then he would need to become even stronger. He needed to Dethrone Beelzebub. Shinrai would teach the Kai Kai technique to Taro, allowing him to travel freely to the world of the living. He knew that he could grow even stronger there, and maybe even make a difference along the way.
