Stars rushing past. Simulated wind pressure to stabilize the cabin. Lights of new and dying stars flashing past the porthole-shaped window. There is vastness here, and yet there is such little space. Vocado should have been asleep by now. Waiting for the pod to wake him, as it did so routinely. But there was an anxiousness in his chest. A terror.
Was he facing down a duel to the death? No. Conquering a world by his lonesome? Unfortunately not. No, there was something far worse to deal with. Something downright terrifying.
A family reunion.
There were few Bonewoods left, so cultivating this relationship was important. But... What a time to have abandoned the boy. Things had been hectic, sure, but the thousands of missed calls, the dozens of months without an attempt at contact from Vocado. In truth, he'd been scared to reach out. He wasn't quite sure why, but being on the frontlines and conquering worlds for his kingdom seemed easier. Safer.
Vocado's pod raced past a supernova, and in the wake of its exploding force he saw his destination: An asteroid. Small and unassuming, there was a bar hidden beneath the crust, wrapped in an oxygen-bubble. It had started as one of those new-age hipster bars, where the owners intentionally chose a terrible location to seem more "worldly". In the six months that followed, pirates overran the place. A fitting end, one might suppose.
With a slam, the pod barreled into the hurtling asteroid, opening its hatch with a hiss. Cracking his neck, Vocado stepped forth, and walked toward the seedy hole-in-the-cavern-wall with no name.
The saloon door swung open, with hardly more than a handful of patrons in sight. Music played from a machine on its last legs, and a robotic bartender spouted obscenities from its clearly modified voice box.
Somewhere in this grime-ridden room was his young nephew. The dark atmosphere made him hard to pick out, so he did the only logical thing and fired an energy bullet toward what could only be described as a jukebox. It shattered into a million pieces, catching the attention of just about everyone in the room, inebriated or otherwise.
"This location has been commandeered by an official member of the Saiyan Kingdom Liberation Force. Get out."
Most listened right away, scurrying off without much fuss, having to squeeze past the royal-purple-sporting Saiyan to get out the door. The few who managed to stay behind and complain were met with death stares, and promptly followed suit.
"Except you."
