Lately, Gira had been enjoying getting involved in charity work. While she did enjoy working as a hero in the more traditional sense, she didn't want to forget the reason she started being a hero in the first place; to help people and make the world a better place for normal folks to live. So, today Gira had spent her time performing various tasks for the citizens of Central City. She undertook deliveries, volunteered at soup kitchens (that one was particularly hard given that she hadn't had lunch), volunteered her strength to assist in building a new animal shelter, and even gave food and water to unregistered ki users who were unable to find work. To end the day, she was volunteering at a nursing home, spending time with the lonely elderly folks who were left forgotten by their families. She played cards with a group of elderly men and watered an old lady's plants and read her a book.
As her visit neared its end, she was playing chess with one of the home's older residents. She had no clue how to play this game, but the old man had offered to teach her. Honestly, it just seemed like he was after a little bit of company. From what Gira understood by speaking with him, he had outlived both of his kids and was estranged from the rest of the family. If not for a subsidy from the government, he would be out on the street. Gira thought it all rather unfair. He was a perfectly sweet old man who just wanted to visit with someone from outside of the nursing home that he was doomed to spend the rest of his days in.
"So... the Knight moves like this?" Gira asked tentatively, moving the piece across the board. The old man smiled and nodded in affirmation.
"Yeah, that's it. You sure do learn fast. Kids these days are pretty smart, huh?" He beamed across the table at the young Saiyan, causing Gira to blush in embarrassment and chuckle nervously while the old man took his turn, purposefully dragging out his move to spend more time with the kind young lady.
"I guess so. I don't think i'm really all that smart, but I guess I can pick stuff up pretty easily." Once the old man made his move, Gira looked down at the board, her gears turning as she considered what to do next.
"Don't sell yerself short, little miss. I tried to teach my son this game when he was about your age. Never really picked it up, though." Gira did not respond, still considering her next move. Even in a game like this, she was determined not to lose. Call it the usual Saiyan pride. Suddenly, Gira's face lit up as she noticed a potential winning move, moving her Queen across the board and placing it next to where the old man's King was boxed in.
"Um... I think that's checkmate." Gira smiled sweetly at the old man, who looked down at the board in a vain attempt to find a way for his King to escape. When he realized he had lost, he let out a wheezing laugh.
"Well, i'll be, kid! Yer a damn natural. Good game." Gira rubbed the back of her neck nervously, smiling at her new elderly friend.
"No big deal. I'm pretty good with strategy games and this isn't all that different when you really think about it." The old man shook his head, running his fingers through his goatee.
"There ya go again, selling yerself short. I don't mind, though. Just means yer humble. You kinda remind me of my daughter. She was a lot like you; a sweetheart. Kami rest her soul. I'd like to see how ya do in a game of Menace. If you say ye're good at strategy games, then you'd probably like it. Care to play a round before ya go?" Gira wanted to get home before it got too late, but the earnest way the old man asked for a little bit more of her time made her not want to disappoint him.
"Uh... sure! I'll get the board." The young hero stood up and walked behind their table, looking for the Menace board while the old man cleaned up the chess pieces from their game and put the board back in its box. Meanwhile, Gira sifted through various board games, cards, and other assorted games in an attempt to hunt down the one the old man wanted. Little did she know, her day was about to change for the worst.
