DRAGON SLAYING
The sun was shining bright on the Southern most continent of the planet known as Earth. Warm air, a light breeze and of course the smell of the sea pouring into your nostrils creating a fresh new day. A fresh start was exactly what Bonsai was looking for, and by the looks of it, there was no better place to start on the planet. The paradise like atmosphere that surrounded him was what many dreamed of, and now Bonsai was living it. After leaving Konats in search of adventure in the name of exploration, Bonsai was happy he found Earth. It was beginning to look like things were going to be ok for the Konatsian Knight. If every planet he visited was similar to Earth, then he was looking forward to what wild adventures awaited him.
Today's exploration lead Bonsai to a part of the Southern Continent that wasn't littered by noisy cities and powerful machines. It was actually home to peaceful villagers that kept to themselves that loved to live off the land. These culture influenced villagers believed in the simple life and would never resort to the luxuries a city life would provide. This was something that was common around the area and also something very prideful for the ones living it. Although the villages and its inhabitants were friendly, they also were highly superstitious as folklore was famous and was something very real to them. No matter how bizarre it seemed. Legends were real, and so were the monsters that inhabited those stories.
Walking down a small dirt path that seemed to have been made by constant travelers, Bonsai found himself walking towards what looked like his first village. Thick green lush grass occupied both sides of him that stretched until it meet a treeline with a combination of tropical plants and trees. The sky above him was bright blue with a little amount of clouds occupying it allowing the sun to emits rays on the land below. With the village coming up soon, Bonsai had high hopes its residents would be welcoming to him. He heard the villages around here usually were, which was why the swordsman was so inclined to check them out in the first place.
Entering the small village, Bonsai rested his hand on top the hilt of his sword in a relaxed manner as his sword was attached to his belt. An eerie silence filled the village as the swordsman moved his head from left to right, slowly scanning the area for any signs of life. However, it was looking more grim the longer he looked around. The scene that played out before him was an odd one. No signs of any recent fires being made or put out and doors to huts were left open as if the entire place left on a whim. Several feet ahead of him was a wide wicker basket which was resting on its side with a dozen picked apples pouring out of it. The basket looked like it was left behind just like several other articles of clothing and assorted food and farming tools.
"Just what happened here?" Bonsai thought to himself as he put one foot in front of the other, making his way through the vacant village.
As time passed it was clear this entire village dropped everything and left on a dime. Every hut the Konatsian walked into was vacant and all told the same story. Something happened here, and whatever it was had to be something so terrifying that every villager felt the need to leave. Rest his palm above his head on the door frame of the front entry way of a hut, Bonsai let out a sigh as it was looking like he was going to have to travel further to find any signs of life. Sliding his hand down the frame in disappointment, Bonsai turned in place as he began to make his way out of the village. His lonely footsteps could be heard filling up the surrounding area as the pitter patter of his boots lead him back to the entrance of the village from where he originally entered.
Stopping in place and looking over his shoulder, Bonsai gave the deserted village one last look before proceeding to the next. That is, until he heard something moving around near him. Keeping his eyes locked on the village, his pointy ears did what they do best... listened closely.
*scitter scatter*
Raising a brow curiously, Bonsai knew now his mind wasn't playing tricks on him. His pointy ears revealed to him that whatever it was that was moving was of short stature and didn't want to be seen. Rotating his body and facing the village now, Bonsai concentrated and relaxed his eyes as he tried to allow himself to see whatever it was moving around. Could it be the reason everyone left? Was it possible someone stayed behind? As the swordsman attempted to locate the individual, he managed to spot a blur followed by the wicket basket moving slightly.
"There." Bonsai said to himself as he pressed the guard of his sword upwards with his thumb, unlocking it from its sheath. With is opposite hand, he slowly brought it around to the front of his body as his hand opened up and hovered ever so slightly above the handle. Bending his knees slightly and crouching down, Bonsai readied himself and waited for the right time to strike. Closing his eyes, the Konatsian focused on the world around him.
After several moments, the Konatsian felt the vibrations in the air the short stranger created as he moved from hut to hut in a quick fashion. Then... as soon as the individual got brave and within range of the Konatsian Knight, he would strike.
With a quick kick off the ground, Bonsai suddenly vanished from sight as he left behind a small cloud of dirt that slowly floated upwards into the air. Then, with a blink of an eye, the swordsman appeared with his sword drawn as the tip of it was a mere inch away from the tiny person. A look of shock was formed on the individuals face as his eyes grew large while his brain processed what just happened.
"What happened here? Who are you?" Bonsai asked in a serious tone.
"Woah! Look just take it easy alright? I'm a villager here ok!? Its cool, its cool!" The stranger said as he starred down the edge of the sword.
"Then why are you running around trying not to be seen?" Bonsai asked.
"Look... its because I'm the fastest in the village, so I'm tasked with coming here when the coast is clear to get whatever food and supplies we may have left behind." He stated.
"When the coast is clear?... Are you expecting a threat?" Bonsai asked.
"Look... can you just, put that thing away. Its hard to think with it in my face." The stranger asked.
Taking a moment, Bonsai slowly decided to pull his sword away from the short statured stranger as he kept his eyes locked on him. Slowly sliding his sword back into his sheath, Bonsai's hand remained on the grip as he watched the man let out a sigh of relief before setting his things down and taking a seat on top of them for himself. The small stranger was yellow skinned who looked to have on red suspenders and a brown cap with two matching horn sticking out of the top of it. His feet held red pointy shoes that curled upwards by his toes. In one hand he still held a white in color doughnut that looked to have a bite already taken out of it. Most likely from him.
Letting out a sigh, the short slivered eyed stranger sighed before speaking. "Look... This village was a peaceful one full of life and enjoyment. However, a recent 'threat' as you put it arrived a few days ago out of no where... A giant dragon appeared and warned us to leave or else he'd burn our entire village down. A few of the young men attempted to challenge and fight the dragon, however, they were ultimately unsuccessful and ended up just making the dragon even more mad. This caused him to take one of the villagers for himself and to guarantee we'd leave immediately."
"And you're saying he still comes around here?" Bonsai asked.
"Yeah... every now and then. One things for sure, if that dragon spots you, you're as good as dead... Just like Miyuu." The villager replied.
"Miyuu? Is that the villager the dragon kid napped when it first arrived?" asked Bonsai.
"Yeah... Poor Miyuu, we don't even know if she's alive. Or where it even took her. One of the survivors from the last group that came here for supplies stated that if dragon sees anyone come around here again, he'd burn the village to the ground." The villager replied in a sad tone.
Bonsai continued to look down at the villager as he could see he was telling the truth and clearly heart broken over what transpired here.
"Makes sense, so that's why you do the runs to this village now. Since your the fastest your harder to spot than a large group of people attempting to be sneaky about it.... But what I want to know is, why did this dragon want you all to leave here so suddenly? Whats so special about this place?" Bonsai asked.
Raising his head, the villager looked up at Bonsai and gave him a small smirk. "Well, turns out this village is built on a special kind of dirt that is not only found in the South, but also holds the perfect ingredients for a nice dragon nest. The dirt is warmer and holds nutrients that the eggs can absorb to make the dragons stronger when they hatch. If that dragon burns this village down, that extra heat will only intensify the dirt properties, essentially making super dragons.... Oh, by the way, my names Mondo."
