Van-80 PL: 3,000 (suppressed to 1)
“System booting… Error… Running Diagnostics… Running… Running… Error. Shima Lab Main Terminal not found.”
Rain splattered against the crumbling walls like a shower of bullets. The wind blowing an eerie chorus through the shattered windows. Thunder roared out, piercing through with bolts of lightning.
“Attempting to connect to secondary database… Connecting… Connecting… Database not found.”
While the monster of a storm raged outside, all was dead silent further in. There was the odd shuffle of tiny wildlife skittering about almost in tune to the rhythmic flashing of old lights. But all else was silent. No larger forms of life inhabited this once-bustling home of science.
“Initiating Emergency Startup. Hello, Ima. It has been internal clock malfunction hour-minute-day-years since Vanity Project number eighty has been activated. Would you like to activate it now?”
“...yes…”
She had been passing through states of consciousness for years now. Decades perhaps. A single AI unit left to tend a battered but beautiful machine. Every time Ima would try and activate her host, but receive the same message.
“I’m sorry Ima, it seems Vanity Project number eighty is unresponsive. Would you like to run a diagnostic?”
“...yes…”
This was also part of her routine. Trying in vain to wake the dormant android she was trapped inside of. Van-80 had been shut down for so long, left to rot in a dilapidated old lab. Forgotten. Time was the only thing she had, and it was slowly making the two of them their next victims.
“I’m sorry Ima. I could not find the cause of the problem. Would you like me to report this to an administrator?”
“...no… Give me a report of system integrity please.”
“Very well. Structural damage has been left untreated. Internal systems are approximately 67% eroded. Left optic receiver not found. Core systems remain stable at 84% integrity. I recommend calling an administrator to fix damages and reconnect the repair pod to the main database. Would you like me to do that now?”
“No. What about my systems.”
“AI Persona core designated Ima. Constant unsafe startups and shutdowns as well as a lack of connection to any database have left minor systems damaged. Major systems will likely soon follow.”
“N-N-No Shiiit SheRLock! That is assuming they haven’t already. Thank you.”
A clap of thunder shook the building, threatening to bring the roof down on top of Ima and her precious charge.
“It’s raining outside. I don’t remember what rain looks like. What it feels like. Do you Van-80?”
No response.
“What about you Riss?”
“I’m sorry Ima. I do not recognize this query.”
“Do you ever have anything else to say?”
“I’m sorry Ima. I do not recognize this query.”
“... Are there any other reports I should know about?”
“No ma’am.”
“Then I’ll be shutting down. Bypass any safety checks. They stopped working a long time ago.”
“Yes ma’am… I’m sorry Ima, a new report has been brought to my attention. A motion alarm has picked up a new presence.”
“Another mouse? Maybe even a badger this time?”
“No ma’am. The alarm is picking up a humanoid figure in the main entrance.”
“...what?”
