APPEARANCE: Light blue skin. Pitch black eyes. Mid-back length navy blue hair. 159cm/5'2". Petite physique. Pointed ears & long prehensile tail often used as a third hand. Enjoys bright makeup and color-coordinated outfits.
BACKGROUND: Born in a place where knowledge is the most valuable of possessions, there was little doubt in her parents' minds that Meringue would be yet another obedient little cog in the machine, diligently filing any new findings. From the most mundane of fact to wondrous discoveries from each corners of the galaxy, she was destined to contribute to their ever-growing Archives – a treasure trove of information jealously guarded and never to be shared.
As the youngest daughter of seven, she was the baby, the child who would never get reprimanded, no matter what. Oh, her parents had high hopes for her, wanted her to be someone brilliant like her siblings and relatives. After all, their family was known for their astute minds, fully dedicated to their species never-ending quest for knowledge. And for those who didn't, well, they were simply not worth remembering.
And for the most part of her childhood and teen years, she was just that, a worthy member of her family and their society at large. A child whose innate curiosity would push her to seek answers, eyes gleaming with wonder at the thought of this vast universe and all that could be discovered, learned. Yet, *knowledge* felt like a tenuous concept to her, an idea she couldn't quite grasp. What was it, truly, and what was it not? Neither the first nor last to question her kind's avid pursuit of this elusive insight on all things, Meringue would end up realizing that it wasn't so much understanding the world as much as knowing things to the sake of knowing them, and the illusory impression they could keep it safe, away from prying eyes. For all their brilliant scientific minds, cunning intelligence officers and explorers, their prized Archives were nothing more than a graveyard, no matter how advanced it was, how valuable its content. A pointless endeavor.
However, knowing this did not make her feel more enlightened, and certainly not superior to her peers. Instead, she was feeling trapped, all too aware that she would simply be pushed aside, forgotten – there was no place for her in their world. In front of her parents, she would still be playing her part, that of a bright young woman joining the ranks of the brilliant researchers of her generation, turning her silly passion for plants into something worthy of respect. Enough to fit the mold her parents had carved for her, at least.
Truth be told, Meringue was feeling dishonest, as much towards them than herself, her own wants and desires. This planet was too narrow an horizon for her, and she longed for so much more. Unfortunately, her place was in a lab, behind a desk, not traveling the was expanse of space. The order of things that was not to be disturbed, no matter how many times dissident minds had tried.
As such, she had to think more carefully about her option, and what she truly wanted for herself. Despite all her gripes with the way their society was run, her hunger for novelty and knowledge had always been genuine, albeit more passionate than the average citizen. She did not see herself as more special than any other, yet knew that no matter how hard she would try, she could never truly fit in. And for every problem there had to be a solution, this one was no different. She was sure of it.
A solution that would take the form of a certain small blue planet, whose inhabitants ignited a spark of interest in her. At first, it was only a passing fancy, starting with a few notes scribbled on a report by a fellow researcher looking into the native flora of said planet ; as time passed, it evolved in a genuine fascination, and a peak into the Archives, however outdated they could be.
She would go to Earth.
Yet wanting would only take her so far, and definitely not near any spaceship. No, she had to think this through, and despite claiming lacking the cunning of her kin, she was far from helpless when it came to getting what she wanted. And if buttering up her parents and employer wasn't going to work, she would have to resort to less-than-honest ways – the end justifies the means, right?
That day, as she sat in the small shuttle, Meringue knew it would be a one-way trip. She had become a traitor who bribed some of her peers to access information she wasn't allowed to, a thief leaving the planet without authorization, and above all else, a disappointment to her family. But it was the price to pay for her ambition, and the yearning that had been gnawing at her for years. Thus, pushing aside the sadness swelling in her chest, she left her home behind – unsure it was ever hers to begin with.
Her arrival on her Earth was, not unlike her journey up until there, quite tumultuous. Most of what she knew about the planet turned out to be far more out-of-date than expected, and the little she had was not much to go with : a name and an address.
Truth be told, twenty one years of existence had not prepared her for such a change of scenery, and if she had to admit that she wasn't as ready as she imagined herself to be, there was enough resourcefulness and wits in her to pull through.
Earth had, for lack of better words, exceeded all her expectations. Life here was a far cry from what she had known until then ; no more rigid and nonsensical laws, no more dedication to an ultimately pointless tradition. And if the first few months there had been a bit rough, she was all the more delighted whenever she would come across anything sparking her interest. Anything to push aside the knowledge that the next day she could very well be dragged back to her home planet.
The matter of the mysterious name and address she had obtained via questionable means would be settled a few months after her arrival, give or take. One Dr. Kelp and her small team of loyal assistants, conducing researches of dubious morals in a small laboratory tucked in a quiet corner of the Eastern Pastures. If the first contact was tense to say the least, Meringue had little problem convincing her that her intentions were all in the name of science, and even less so proving she could be a worthy addition to the team. After all, it wasn't so much different from what she had already been doing back then, and who wouldn't be intrigued by those strange creatures, half-mammals half-plants, growing in that greenhouse of hers? Research for the sake of science and new discoveries, without ever taking a step-back to think if they truly should go on.
And there it was, her second chance. The one she had been looking for since her arrival, despite countless nights woken up by regrets tightening her throat and the nagging feeling she might have made a mistake. Except now, she had found what she was still lacking: recognition beyond her duties, and a sense of belonging.
Following that, it had been only a matter of settling down, laying low and learning how to blend. As well as letting go of old habits: knowledge was now meant to be shared, as it should've always been. Although easier said than done, she truly wanted to fit in, make a place for herself here.
And after now five years among Earthlings, she was convinced that Earth was the place she could truly call home.
