CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
APPEARANCE:
Parker is a relatively average looking guy. If you were to see him on the street, the only thing that might stand out is that he looks like he goes to the gym a lot, and has strikingly blue eyes. His hair is dark, cropped close on the sides with a little length on top, and his skin is ever so slightly olive. He typically wears a plain solid-color tee shirt under a brown leather bomber jacket, cargo pants tucked into his black leather paratrooper boots, and an old red scarf.
When he activates that strange bracelet of his, the Polar Vortechanger, his appearance drastically changes. His body is enveloped in a light grey armor with shining red accents, somewhat reminiscent of an Arcosian’s base form, his head adorned with a single horn in the middle.
BACKGROUND: The son of a pair of accomplished scientists - an astronomer and a xeno-anthropologist, Parker was meant for a life of learning and academia and staring up at the stars before bed. However, his parents bore a terrible curse - that of ambition. With each passing day, their thirst for the accolades of their colleagues grew stronger, and ultimately it would make them reckless. In a desperate bid to make contact with new, previously undiscovered extraterrestrial life, they sent out a message to the stars. It was an invitation, open to any who might take it, with the only stipulation being that the visitors had to be newcomers to the planet Earth.
They couldn’t have known that their message would pique the interest of a particularly vicious band of space raiders. They were each from species already known to the Earthlings, but what did that matter? None of them individually had even been to Earth, so clearly the invite applied to them!
Without exploring the more gruesome details, the raiders arrived at the Bomba household, and found very little worth taking. After helping themselves to the Earthling family’s food, they discovered that the only thing of value was a child, little more than a toddler, and surprisingly unafraid of their presence. And so it was that 4-year-old Parker Bomba was kidnapped by some of the galaxy’s most wanted.
The raiders wasted no time putting little Parker to work - crawling into tight spaces to make difficult ship repairs, cleaning the worst parts of the ship, and before long picking pockets at spaceports. They hadn’t accounted, however, for how quickly human children grow, and how smart they could be. After only a few short years, Parker was starting to ask questions and talk back and become more of a nuisance than he was worth. Had he shown himself to be ruthless or otherwise predisposed to the life of a space raider, maybe they would have taken him in and trained him as one of their own. Instead, the sold him to a trafficker for less than he was worth but more than enough to keep the crew drunk and fed for years.
Parker found himself on a planet that looked like it had seen extended war - ruined buildings, bodies still in the streets, general ruin all around. He, along with a few dozen other people who had found themselves in the same position he was in, were led to the capital ship of an Arcosian fleet that had landed on this planet’s surface. There, a strange little man with horns - Parker would later learn that the man was an Arcosian, though not one of any consequence - explained to them that they were here to clean up the damage, bury the bodies, and get the planet up to code for an upcoming auction. They were given what Parker felt was an impossible deadline, given he wasn’t the only literal child in the group.
What followed were several years of this sort of hard labor, fixing up the messes made by a mid-class Arcosian made when conquering backwater worlds with the intent to sell them to the highest bidder. He wasn’t truly a slave, though - he was paid in company scrip after all, which he could use to exchange for such luxury goods as thin soup and water that tasted funny.
It was during this time that Parker met an old man - a fellow Earthling, though one of the more animal-like people of his homeworld. A wrinkled and grouchy old rooster, Old Man Cocklin could tell that Parker was smarter than most, had a potential that he’d only seen in a rare few, and never seen fully realized. Between shifts moving rubble and patching holes in walls, Old Man Cocklin would tell him stories of mighty space heroes from ages past. Eventually, between worlds, Old Man Cocklin would teach Parker some ancient family secrets - the sort of secrets that involve kicking peoples’ faces in.
Cocklin wasn’t the only one that had picked up on Parker’s intellect. A foreman had noticed Parker showing an aptitude for basic engineering, using that brain of his to make the work easier on himself and his teammates - and preventing some deaths in the process. One afternoon Parker was told he would be transferred to an administrative site on Arcose, where he would serve as a laboratory assistant. As a parting gift, Cocklin gave the now-adult Parker two things - his red scarf, and a brief lesson an old Cocklin family technique - the ability to conjure a physical platform that could carry you through the air.
Life on Arcose was physically much easier than before, but far more treacherous. He no longer had to break his back lifting rocks, but now was forced to navigate the complex Arcosian social order. Each slip, each mistake, would lead to penalties. Sometimes the penalty would be a double shift, sometimes it would be three days without food. Sometimes it would just be a physical beating. But when he could get through a day without saying something wrong or putting something an inch too far to the left, he was able to learn and observe and see what these people were working on.
They were developing some sort of weapon, something that would further amplify the Arcosians’ unique transformative powers. This device would only further widen the gap between species by enhancing the already massive advantage of the Arcosians.
Parker decided he couldn’t let that happen.
In the dead of night, he broke into the research lab, face covered by Old Man Cocklin’s scarf. He managed to reach the device prototype without incident. He wasn’t sure what to expect - a suit of powered armor, perhaps, or some kind of gene therapy capsule. Instead, on a small pedestal, he found what amounted to a funny looking bracelet, set with a gem reminiscent of the top of an Arcosian’s head. The gem itself was dull grey in color, until Parker picked it up. Once in his hands, the gem turned a bright crimson red, similar to Cocklin’s scarf. Parker thought nothing of it, and turned to leave.
Only to find himself faced with the security team for the facility. Before words could be exchanged, Parker made what was probably a rash and reckless decision. He slapped the bracelet onto his wrist, and in a flash of brilliant red light, found himself transformed. He felt stronger, faster, even a little smarter. He dispatched the surprised security team with ease, Old Man Cocklin’s lessons aiding him as much as the power of the bracelet, and made his escape into the night.
Later he would regret not taking a moment to destroy the facility, or at least smash up some of the computers. But he could cross that bridge later, because now he needed to find a way off Arcose and back to Earth - or any other planet with scientists, really - and show them what the Arcosians were working on. They could not be allowed to exploit the galaxy any more than they already had.
