CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
APPEARANCE:
BACKGROUND: In the immediate galaxy, the name Hibernal Wintergreen has been associated with widespread fear, horrific tyranny, mass conquest and merciless bloodshed for centuries. Tales abound of his conquests, of planets razed to the ground, others enslaved. Such atrocities were all committed under his banner- in his name.
But long before he was a tyrant, Hibernal was a scholar.
Hibernal is one of the few Arcosians left from his era- an ancient relic. Born into a noble family of exceptionally rich barons, Hibernal lived his early life perched atop a tower of privilege. He remembered a time in his youth before space travel was commonplace. He remembered the golden age of the Arcosian empire. He remembers the prosperity, the growth, the technological advancement. At the time, it seemed unstoppable- Arcosians were to stand atop the galaxy in their shining towers. In the galactic competition for dominance, in the year 500-600, Arcosians stood atop all. They had progressed the farthest the fastest.
It's little wonder Hibernal grew to be patriotic.
He recieved the finest education- learned about all the new races discovered. Learned about how the world advanced, about how societies grew and developed. As it turns out, Hibernal was a star student. For the first 70 years of his life, he was a sponge for information. He wrote papers and books about how to develop stable societies, about military tactics, about the impact of technology on inter-species relations. Hibernal wanted to know how the galaxy worked on a fundamental level- and then to share that information with his peers.
All in the hopes of creating a better, more stable galaxy.
However... we all know that this bright-eyed youngster was not to be remembered as fondly as he would've wished. What changed?
It was a slow transition at first. Small things. Growing inequality. Repeating past mistakes. A bit of piracy.
But it got bigger. Outside forces threatening the Arcosian dominance over technology and trade, even though they'd had such an enormous lead.
Greed, corruption all the way up the chain of authority. Widespread instability. Famine. Death. All preventable... if not for the few atop the golden thrones, who had turned the shining beacon of their nation into a corrupt hive.
How could this have happened? thought Hibernal. How could such a prosperous nation, such a superpower, be broken into such a shadow of it's former self?
As you'll recall, Hibernal was a scholar. Thus, Hibernal did what any good scholar did- study. Studied his own nation. Events, transactions, social movements.
Thus, Hibernal made his thesis. Two things were required for long term stability and widespread progress:
1. Strong, unerring leadership, immune to material desires. One which wielded absolute authority. One which ensured the continuity of their ideals using whatever means needed.
2. Conflict, so that those with power, influence and intelligence could never rest on their laurels, so that they always had motivation for progress and innovation. Conflict with other ideas would refine your own, making new ideas and concepts as they were adapted and assimilated into the whole. Attack proactively. Shut down rebellion at the source. Trample planets before they have the chance to trample you.
It is with this thesis that Hibernal quit his scholarly endeavors. Now... now, it was time to put his theory into practice.
He enlisted in the military. His charisma and opposition to corruption, along with his natural strength, earned him many supporters and followers, those who believed in his cause and purpose as he did. He climbed the ranks of the military, waging resource wars across the galaxy. His conquests only further convinced him of his ideals- all he could think of was how these planets could've been much more resilient, much more prosperous, if only they were run like how they ought to be.
To Hibernal, it seemed the only one who knew how things ought to be run, was him.
Victories, conquests. Fear. Hibernal left his mark wherever he went- building fear for his name. Awareness of his ability. Knowledge of his brutality, his ruthlessness. Even early in his career. Hibernal knew his end goal.
First, leadership of Arcose. Then, leadership of the galaxy.
Since then, he'd been steadily rising in military rank, despite his opposition to the corrupt officials and nobles which often funded him. His sheer military skill and popularity among disenfranchised Arcosians ensured this. Such was the situation for centuries- conquering, killing, trampling those beneath him underfoot. All in the name of long term stability. All in the name of his grandiose ideals, ones which had remained after 400 years... but 400 years of slaughtering and conquering in the name of a better future which still seemed so far wore on the mind.
Perhaps that's why he took on a daughter. A successor, Ise- despite having avoided children and personal attachments for so long, the general had a daughter. By all means, a point of weakness- a chink in his centuries-old armor. Nonetheless, she remained.
Still, nobody would doubt Hibernal's dedication to his cause. The Emperor went missing- now, it was time for his centuries-long plan to begin.
He was forced to walk this path, even if it led him straight to hell. He had already walked too far to turn back.
