In these serendipitous moments we found ourselves in, those precious few moments of the day when we can peer into the lives of these characters, we often see the important moments: the first meetings, the fights, the drama. Now, Cheri was notable in a few respects (a few of which could scarcely be described without the description of such a thing being taken as boasting), but chief among them given this context is that we find Cheri in her moments of business and politics: we find her doing her job, usually rather hesitant to engage in the trivial displays of violence and power most of her power reveled in. And sometimes this little job of hers required… board meetings. Appointments. A dozen different flavours of analysis.
Ambrose had caught the public’s attention rather vividly with his interjection during the so-called ‘Kronos Attack’, but this little scientific appointment between them preceded that. Its purpose? To facilitate fruitful discussion with regard to the revitalisation effort on Plant, of course! Cheri had given this quite a lot of thought over the years— for a while, when the war was pressing, it sometimes seemed she was the only one who considered the matter— but a variety of opinions was, at the very least, useful in helping to grant details to a plan. She already had reason to respect Ambrose, but his nuggets of wisdom from the attack (unwisely applied to a delicate situation as they may have been) inspired confidence that the next phase in revitalisation would soon be policy-worthy.
Cheri was in one of Hatchi’s many publicly-funded, nationally-owned scientific laboratories, this one specialising in genetic work, biology, and the environmental sciences (which on Plant mostly meant ‘destron removal’ and ‘turning the Destron Crags into just The Crags’)— this is where she’d invited Ambrose to meet. She had gotten the laboratory ready and full of ‘props’, screens, and available, relevant charts. It even had the elemental table pinned up on the wall, one of those famous ‘evolution of the tuffle’ walking diagrams that the humans of Earth had apparently co-opted for their own, and a 1:1 scale model of a ‘Plantian wooly mammoth’, five feet tall. This facility, and others still, possessed great wealths of genetic diversity in ‘DNA banks’ of a sort, containing the genetics of many, many lifeforms once native to Plant but had been rendered extinct, and many, many more native organisms whose extinctions had since been reversed (some of whom had been quite the hit for the novelty pet market, too).
