Mint listened to each word that slipped out of Azoth’s lips. Each word made him more angry and annoyed. He didn’t understand the bigger picture. No doubt the smaller picture Azoth understood. Mint was a businessman looking at himself. He wanted to increase his own power in the empire. Though he also seemed to think he was right in his bluster. ‘Sitting’ around for one month. While Azoth and Hibernal gallivanting across the stars, he was talking with lords. He was making business deals. He was making sure nothing happened to input the two rivals from settling and sitting to talk. That had been his plan. Would it have worked? Maybe not. He would never know for sure but at least he could try to find a common understanding. At least he could know who to follow and throw his support. Now? He was bowing his head to someone that for a split moment, Mint wanted to leap upon and bash his skull into the pavement. Maybe if he had the strength to do it he might have been tempted to allow this feeling to overcome him. But he didn’t and he did have the self-restraint to keep these feelings under control.
He allowed Azoth to finish his speech and would have started speaking right away. But Hibernal spoke first and Mint would not be as rude as to cut off his speech. Hibernal was a tired old man, but he was still someone who had earned respect. Someone who had fought for Arcose for 500 years. Whether it was right or wrong, Mint didn’t care. It was still someone he’d at least hear the words of. He could perhaps impart great wisdom with them. Though his words didn’t inspire much of Mint. He agreed with the idea that unity and cooperation do not pre-say bring peace. But it brought stability. Stability for the right person to rise. Azoth and Hibernal were both flawed emperors. If he had the chance to help make one emperor rise, why would he not help find the most powerful one to rule? Why would he throw his full support behind them? “Well it was worth the effort General Hibernal. If you wish to do that is your choice. I won’t get in the way of that. However, I do respectfully disagree with your assessment of my ideas.” Mint looked up from his bowing position, his face more calm and collected.
Hibernal did have a few more things to say mainly about Ise and how he’d not leave the throne until he died. He did feel a pang of guilt. Ise was someone he actually could see being the emperor but his actions here may have made that modeling impossible. Though if Ise did forgive him for his actions today perhaps he’d help her. She had shown him nothing but respect in their encounters. Unlike Azoth or even Hibernal. Finally, though it seemed the time for battle would begin. Mint coughed into his hand, “Before I let you both draw some fisticuffs I have something to say. I’d like to respond to both of your rebutlets. I know it is foolish to try to stop a battle when you are both already prepared for it, but call me a fool. While both your arms of battle are the fist, mine is the mind. And I think personally, you both missed what I’m trying to say and do. So I’m going to explain it.” Mint would slowly stand to his feet but kept a curt bow to Azoth while standing straight when he eyed Hibernal.
“Lord Azoth, first I apologize to you. You seem to believe that I didn’t have your interest at heart. That is true. I didn’t. I have an interest in Arcose the planet. See I’m a businessman. I wish for Arcose to be stable. So when I saw two vying powers for the emperor, I wanted to do my research and know each side. Your side’s strength was your more peaceful approach to potential planetary conquest and its desire to improve and spread its knowledge. Hibernal strength was a powerful military that would just take what was wanted. You were wrong, Hibernal was old but had an heir ready to take the throne in a few years. I had no desire to mold anyone to be anything. When something is ridged like stone, you do not mold it. If you don’t desire the stone you crush it or you allow it to stand. I merely wished to place myself in a position to advise and give my expertise to the candidate. Yes, part of it was to help myself rise to public power. But it was also done to help Arcose. Truly, what is the point of power if nothing exists to exercise power upon?” Mint let that question ponder as he glanced around the room.
“When I suggest something, I do it because I believe it can be useful. General Hibernal could have been a good general. He has the skill, experience, and knowledge of the universe that would make him a cunning leader in that regard. I think an area maybe while you're most certainly skilled in, Hibernal may have had the edge of inexperience. Of course, you wouldn’t have been able to do whatever you wanted so you’d have installed your own men in positions of power to check him. Of course, Hibernal as he stated would not have joined, but I do believe that the plan itself was not flawed. You believing otherwise while not greatly surprising is disappointing for a man as clever as yourself. You think I’m trying to outsmart you or weaken your position. If I wanted the throne I’d have taken it. While you both were in space doing whatever the fuck you were I could of taken that throne. I didn’t because I am well aware that I am not the most qualified to rule Arcose. You two are lord Azoth.”
Mint's fist clenched as he looked towards Azoth. “But you now disrespected me. But it seems I have disrespected you in some regard first. So for that, I apologize.” Mint bowed his head to Azoth as his fist slowly uncoiled. “I will have to prove my loyalty to Arcose. Whoever sits the throne I will be loyal to. I didn’t have the time to throw my full lot behind someone but the next emperor I shall. I am a servant for Arcose first and myself second. But yes I've asked something of you first, as a sign of my loyalty. But that was perhaps not the right way to go about it. You believe it to be me trying to gain something out of my loyalty that you feel has been unproven. So I’ll ask both of you then. Because as you have both pointed out, neither of you have fallen. When you become emperor. What will you have me do?” Mint kept his posture; he didn’t kneel but his head was tilted as a sign of waiting for an order or command of some kind.
