"...Some would say that the progress of technology in our modern world, especially in the last few centuries, has been exponential. At a first glance this may seem to be true." Locke paused as his eyes carefully swept the classroom. At the least his teachings were some of the few in these higher grade classes that didn't sway many to sleep. "Take a look at energy, for example," The sound of chalk against a board would never not be cathartic no matter how "outdated" it was. In a smooth unbreaking motion Locke had roughly sketched the housings of two engines: one being an antique diesel car motor and the other being the cores found in an average spacecraft. "These two pieces of technology are both employed in the service of transportation. One utilizes the combustion of a highly flammable liquid, gasoline, and the other is a miniaturized version of a fusion reactor that was once though impossible even on a much larger frame."
Two pairs of numbers were written atop both visual aides. "In theory an average refined liter of gasoline has the potential energy to generate eight-point eight Kilowatt-hours. A reactor even of the most basic variety can produce nearly seven hundred Kilowatt-hours." With a small flourish Locke stepped a bit closer to the front row. "As most would assume seven hundred in an hour is a fair bit more than just under nine. And as before to assume that the leap from petrol to fission or fusion seems almost magical. However! There is still a fair bit of science behind it, and without the advancements of such rudimentary engines beforehand many scientists would have never started the search into alternative forms of energy. Not only does this mean immense sources of power are smaller and cheaper for public use... it also means that certain aspects of our society have turned this development against us. The same force that can move a ship across the cosmos in a matter of hours or days can also be applied on a much smaller scale. Military applications in tanks and weaponry are ever present, and there's a growing concern regarding regulation on the manufacturing and distribution of such cores."
Locke placed his nub of chalk down with care, silent for a moment as he examined the room once more. "Anyone have an example for what a rogue element could even possibly use something like this for?" He'd wait a few seconds. No hands immediately shot up but Locke would pick on whoever was brave enough to be the first.
