Deep in the bitter cold of the Glazed Sea, thousands of miles away from civilization, a lone Arcosian hovers above the peak of a jagged frozen spire. Ticoga, the Shield of Arcose, had chosen to not bear witness to the tournament currently under way, instead using this time to train, and to think. He hovered in meditation, legs crossed and hands together, palms up, and his eyes are closed.
A soft crimson glow about his body betrays the intensity of his focus, and large, to giants shards of ice and stone, also glowing in that same soft red hue, hover all about and around Ticoga and the spire, held in place by the Arcosian's mind.
Do you think Mint was suited for the throne? Brumal had chided Ticoga. Brumal had said that Mint was nothing more, in truth, than a criminal who happened to still be on Arcose when Azoth had been killed in an ill planned attack on Planet Plant, to crush the Saiyans. A plan that obviously backfired. Mint was Emperor, only because he was in the right place, at the right time. When Ticoga asked Mint to train him in the ways of leadership, Mint turned him away, stating that he had no idea how to teach leadership to another.
Ise wasn't suited... Empress Ise was the adopted daughter of an Arcosian General, whom was killed by Azoth for daring to reach for the throne. Ise, Brumal had told him, was in power only because a third power was needed for equilibrium. To form a Triumvirate. And when Ticoga had sought out Ise for training in leadership at Mint's proposal, Ise had nothing to offer Ticoga...
Except the promise that she and Mint would one day fight for singular supremacy. A battle between Lords of Arcose would not just be devastating to Arcose itself, but in doing so would weaken the Empire, would it not?
I most certainly was not suited. Brumal had admitted, proclaiming his only reason for being a member of the Triumvirate, is because no one had the power to stop him from strongarming Mint into the agreement.
Stop worrying about your past, and look to the future. Brumal had said. The crimes that had seen to the obliteration of his Clan were no longer Ticoga's to bear. Perhaps they never were. But what was that future? Was it with the Triumvirate, each of whom were evidently unworthy of the authority and power they held? Or was it with an entirely new set of Lords that held the titles of Triumvirs? What if the Triumvirate itself was little more than a three way settlement, and not actually formed with the Empire's best interests in mind?
And if Lords like Mint and Ise were only interested in self gain, did that mean they ruled at the expense of the Empire, and not for its ultimate benefit over their own power? Ticoga was avowed to protect the Empire from anything and everything that was a threat to it. What if the eventual, planned power struggle between the Triumvirs was enough to break the spine of the Empire?
Would Ticoga have to choose which Triumvirate to support? Empress Ise and Emperor Mint had certainly seemed to think so. Emperor Brumal... had shown no interest in reaching for more power. Would Ticoga choose to stand aside, and allow the Triumvirs their power struggle?
Or would Ticoga have to step up as the Shield of Arcose, to protect the Empire, and put an end to this conflict before it could begin? Could he kill members of the Triumvirate, to protect the Empire's future? Even if he had the power, which he knew his didn't - could he make that choice? Would the Triumvirs decisions even allow him to make that choice, or would they force him into action to prevent it?
What was the right thing to do for the Empire? Attempting to dismantle the Triumvirate would be treason of the highest order. His very existence, once snuffed out, would be eliminated from all Imperial records, as if he never existed in the first place. What was the answer? What could he, Ticoga, really do to prevent the Empire's fall?
