Firewater (Dion)

    One might find the massive juxtaposition of the bartender behind the bar counter and the immediate world around him incredibly amusing. After all, what would a gentlemanly young man like Dion be doing in a backwater, outlaw-ridden piece of Plant such as this?

    Well, the answer wasn't particularly very surprising. Most of the bars in Sadala Capital already had a massive influx of manpower, and so weren't exactly looking for the fiftieth bartender they'd come across, no matter how good he appeared to be on first impression. Tarbel Village had for him similar circumstances when he looked around for bartending opportunities, and so the last place that enabled him to be able to do what he would consider his very first love just so happened to be one of the places that also sorely needed his expertise.
    
    Though, it didn't do a very good job of asking him for it. To be frank, the nameless mercenary outpost that acted as a hub for the various marauders and desperados was a place that oozed bad vibes to the normally upbeat young man. Dion's more innocent, goody-two-shoes persona conflicted quite badly with the rowdy ruffians that huddled amongst this area outside the capital's outer crust. The only thing that convinced Dion to even entertain the idea of working for the only bar in town was the fact that they had just recently lost their former barman to "unfortunate circumstances", and thus they were in dire need of a mixologist worth his salt.
   
    Plus, after he and Chomei unwillingly left their tab hanging, Dion thought he owed them at least a few hours of his time. 

    And so, Dion found himself manning the only tavern in town completely by his lonesome. Well, normally there were chefs and stuff in the back ready to prepare whatever the masses asked from them, but seeing as it was only midday, and most of the mercs and similar clientele only came during the midnight hours, the pub was basically empty besides himself.

    Which was completely fine by him. Gave Dion ample time to survey his drink selection and what exactly he had to work with, which was what he was currently occupying himself with as he awaited the rush of the twilight time. Looking over the various bottles and ingredients and taking catalogue from one drink to another, he didn't realize someone else had walked into the establishment until he heard a voice echo their entrance from the front doors.

    Perking up immediately, Dion readjusted his formalwear, moving to the frontmost part of the bar counter as he waved the newcomer over, saying in a friendly, inviting tone, "Welcome, miss! Please, have a seat over here. May seem a bit empty at the moment, but that don't mean I can't start the evening off early for y-"

    Stopping midsentence, the bartender realized this woman looked incredibly familiar, and felt incredibly familiar as well. Shifting the spectacles upon the bridge of his nose slightly, Dion blinked in disbelief for a couple seconds before his expression brightened even further.
   
    "M-Ms. Jackie! I-it's always a pleasure to keep you company, ahah. P-please, take a seat, I'll start you off with something light- on the house!"

    While he didn't know too much about the fiery haired fox that now graced his pub with her presence, Dion knew at the very least she was a friend. He and Jackie had met twice before this- once on Namek, where she had been much worse for wear, and then another time whilst on the battlefield in the ruined metropolis area, where she appeared to be in much better shape than before! He found it somewhat ironic that in their two meetings the two had basically shifted roles from one to the other between them, but that was besides the point.

    What mattered was that now, presently, the two seemed to both be in much better states (physically, at least), and Dion hoped to keep that vibe going as he poured Jackie a shot of vodka, mixed with some club soda to keep things relatively easy to start off. 

    Placing it right in front of the stool he expected Jackie to take, Dion would flash the woman a warm, welcoming smile as he said whilst wiping down the counter a bit with a freshly wetted rag, "I-I hope you've been doing well in our time apart, Ms. Jackie. The last time I saw you, our circumstances were much more...strained, and I hope you've been able to, uh, take it easier since then, eheh."

    "A-anyways, I never really got to pay you back for keeping Amara safe during that whole Destron city business a few months back. S-so, while it doesn't even make up for the half of it, order whatever you'd like! I-it's on the house, like I said."

    Even in spite of his nerves, Dion was determined to show some hospitality. After all, if it weren't for Jackie, who knows what might've happened while he and Kabe were trading blows up above? Besides, he always did regret not getting to know her any better the first time they had crossed paths. Perhaps now was ample opportunity to make up for lost time?

    Dion couldn't resist the small giggle that came when seeing the surprised look on Jackie's face at his presence. Indeed, the contrast between one of the roughest, uncivilized places within Plant's Saiyan territory and one of the most paragon-like personalities one could think of was a contrast that Dion found very amusing as well. 

    "Nah, I don't- w-well, not full time at least!" Came Dion's reply as he simultaneously took careful note of the woman's response to being given something to drink. While it had been a while since the skill came to be in any way useful, the bartender still had years of learning to read people and their reactions to certain things said and offered to them. Though it didn't take a Sherlockian intelligence to deduce the clear look of hesitancy now on Jackie's face. 

    He hoped he hadn't made Jackie uncomfortable by thrusting the beverage onto her so soon. Dion was well aware of the history some people had with the touchy subject of alcohol, and from how Jackie reacted, it could be assumed that she happened to be one of those people. The feeling of guilt now weighing a little heavy in the pit of his stomach even as the Earthling went on to accept the drink graciously. 

    Trying to make up for it, Dion took from underneath the counter a different-looking bottle to all the other spirits. A knowing, and reassuring glint in his gaze, the bartender slid the non-alcoholic bottle of  root beer over to Jackie, smiling as he spoke in a slightly sheepish tone, "J-just in case the usual isn't quite your speed, eheh. I always have some nicer alternatives in my inventory."

    Nodding as Jackie went on with her short recap, Dion preoccupied himself with mixing another drink, this time for his own enjoyment as the fiery haired Kami waved away the seriousness of their last combat situation with a nonchalant attitude, as though it was just part of her duty toward the common good to have thrown herself straight into the fray. He admired that inherently good nature of hers- and it wasn't just because it was an attitude he happened to embody as well.

    No, it was a similar admiration, and perhaps a slight sense of envy, that he had toward Nasu. To see people who were good wield power for good was, reassuring, to say the least. Having laid witness to the worst of what man was capable of when given too much power, Dion was continually comforted by people who proved that such cruelty wasn't the status quo. 

    But, simultaneously, he ached to be where they now stood atop the hierarchy of power. Life had stolen so much from him due to his lack of staying power, and his strength (or lack thereof) remained one of the things he very nearly hated himself for. Why? Why, after all of his efforts, did he still fall short on the universal stage of strength?

    Had he not done enough to warrant some compensation? Had he not gone through enough to warrant some sort of recompense?
    
    It was a question that threatened to drive the young man mad, and so, Dion tried to tear his mind away from the one area he still remained so terribly lacking in, choosing to instead refocus on Jackie. Nodding one more time, Dion raised a single finger, signaling for her to wait a moment as he went over to the back of the bar and behind it.

    After a few exchange of words occurred, Dion returned to the front, wiping some of the fallen bangs across his forehead back behind his ears as he said, "Your order'll be up soon- had to wake up some of the cooking staff from their mid-brunch stupor. You'd think they'd be more attentive, seeing as they're always one bad meal away from having their whole shit blown to bits..."

    Realizing that perhaps some of the uncouth attitude that oozed from this Kami-forsaken mercenary outpost was now leaking into his behavior, Dion cleared his throat- attempting to maintain his more gentlemanly appearance as he said, "S-sorry. B-but yeah, even if it's just your nature, I'm still real grateful for it then. The world could always use more kindness, yknow?"

    "A-and one thing is for sure, Amara is definitely a person deserving of some of it." He hoped he didn't linger too suspiciously long on that statement before he continued, stating, "It's real admirable of you, really. So, if no one's taken the time to say so, thank you."
    
    "Can't imagine how time consuming it is going from planet to planet doing the same schtick though...D-do you ever travel with anyone else when you do it?"

    Images of Capper and Bud going through his mind upon the mentioning of Earth coming under fire, Dion's voice became much more concerned- his entire body leaning toward Jackie now as he spoke, "Earth? Under fire? With you protecting it? That's, pretty insane..."

    "...S-seems like I need to take a visit home one of these days...I might not be much, but, a-at least being there the next time danger comes calling might mean something..."

    The young man's lack of battle power hung over his words like an awful aroma. Shaking himself once more to his senses, Dion tried to put some more pep in his step, asking in a brighter tone, "I-I'm sure I'd find some way to make myself useful. Heck, m-maybe I'll find someone proper to train with to get me up to speed, haha..."

    In spite of his best efforts to remain positive, his words, while appearing lighthearted, rang out hollow and unsure. 

    Even now, he struggled to move on.

    Then again, how could he, really?

    A relieved sigh left Dion's lips as Jackie accepted the pseudo-chaser he had offered her, happy to have made up for his small mishap early on. He hadn't even realized Plant bartenders kept something besides alcohol-based drinks in their stockpiles of spirits, but then again, the last time he had been in a bar on Plant was about a year or two ago- perhaps they made more strides in their palette than he thought them able to. 

    Either way, there were greater issues to discuss at length, so to have that little weight lifted off his shoulders helped Dion at least a little bit in preparation. Shrugging, Dion smiled a bit at Jackie's response to his chefs being unruly, and as the conversation began to steer back toward more serious topics, the bartender put on a more formal, yet casual expression on his face- one that held interest, but remained approachable enough to talk with openly.

    The more Jackie spoke on her inherently altruistic nature, the more Dion felt vindicated by his own selfless (yet albeit somewhat stupid) past actions. To hear someone of a similar mindset nearly perfectly verbalize the philosophy he had been struggling to embody for the past twenty years or so of his life was cathartic in a way and helped to encourage even the slightest bit of hope that he could still carry it out himself with his own meager might. Yet at the same time, Jackie had a proven track record- or at least from what he's been able to glean, she did. At least more accomplished than what Dion had been able to do in likely more time. Was he just not made to do what she and so many others were capable of doing? 

    Apparently, Jackie believed otherwise. In the midst of his self-deprecation, the Earthling's words came out to him like a lifeline in his sea of sadness- eyes widening as she spoke to Dion's inherent grit and strength. It was something that he's been told many times over, and while it would take much more than words to rewire what his mind already believed so heavily, Dion appreciated her kindness nonetheless.

    Enough to where the Saiyan was nearly moved to tears. A large part of him still blamed many of his problems, both past and present, on his own perceived weakness. It was why Dion was drawn to the seductive strength increase granted to him by the eldritch sickness coursing through his veins. However, to hear his efforts to try and fix what he thought was wrong did not go unnoticed, it was, a light at the end of a very dark tunnel for him. 

    Still, even so, Dion found it hard to believe. Wiping the glistening wetness from the corners of his eyes, the bartender began to respond whilst taking from underneath the counter his own bottle of root beer, popping off the cap as he said, "I really, really do appreciate the kind words Jackie, but..."

    Shaking his head, Dion took a large swig of his drink before continuing, the tears starting to form at the corners of his gaze again as he spoke, "..I can't believe that. I can't."

    "Too many times have I seen what my strength, or lack-there-of, causes. People I care about get hurt, and I've been too weak to help them. And when I do end up intervening, I end up becoming a burden to those I try help, time and time again..."

    Leaning his head forward, Dion resisted the urge to burst into tears- not wanting to embarrass himself in a public setting. He's cried enough tears already, he didn't want to cry anymore.

    Instead, he once again tried to look to Jackie for hope, returning to an upright posture as he looked at her with renewed, yet albeit infirm, optimism on his face. "A-and yet...here I am. I-I know I'm not worth that much right now, but, it's either I keep going, or the alternative."

    "...And I refuse to run away from those I care about again."

    Gulping nervously, Dion stared directly into Jackie's face, a somewhat pleading look now expressed on his features as he asked her the very same thing he had Nasu not even a week or so ago, "W-which I why I need to ask, Jackie- how? How did you get so strong? I-if there's anything you can tell me, some secret I've been missing- I, I need to know."

    "Not just for me, but for the people I want to help, too."

    The pain Dion worked to conceal for months on end now shone terrible and true on his face.

    "Please, Jackie. Help me to be like you."

    If Dion felt embarrassed before, the shame of trauma dumping on someone who he knew had better things to worry about than an anxiety-ridden inferiority complex was almost too great to handle. If it weren't for Jackie's reassuring composure being kept, he might've had the gall to run out of the place out of sheer humiliation. Still, he made a promise, and no matter the circumstance, Dion refused to run away again. 

    Which was why he forced himself to endure the unease of being so uncomfortably open to Jackie in the first place. She was the only person, or at least one of, the only people who could potentially tell him where he was going wrong. One of the only people who could tell him what path to take, since the one Dion currently was on was clearly only leading him to ruin.

    Instead of a catch-all tale of how she got to where she was, however, Jackie appeared to need to stress something first and foremost- and that was the need to resist placing people like her atop a pedestal. Blinking, Dion hadn't realized he was even doing it, but, then again, how could he avoid it? 

    Of course, it wasn't a fanatical obsession by any means. He knew they were still people in the end, who breathed the same air he did and bled just as he did many, many times. But, it didn't change the fact that they as people were presently, innately greater than he was. Dion may not be the worshipping type, but, it was hard to deny the results Jackie's power has brought her.

    Though, to be reminded of what she's lost in spite of harboring such strength acted as a sobering reality to the originally starstruck Saiyan. It was hard to believe, but, it seemed like he and Jackie held more in common than either of them thought. Her failure to save one of her loved ones mirroring Dion's own. 

    That was where the similarities seemed to end, however, as Jackie's sea of shortcomings quickly began to overwhelm the young man by the magnitude of their severity. He couldn't imagine the pain of having to watch pupil after pupil, shining student after student be ripped of their lives over, and over, and over again. Dion was barely able to hold himself together after Amara died, how could he handle that kind of pain a dozen times over?

    It was at this moment Dion realized how pathetic he really had been acting. Everyone had their demons, their shortcomings, their failures- it's what one did in spite of them that defined who they really were in times of need. The realization hit him like a slap in the face, and while his shame did grow in intensity, it was a revelation that he needed to revel in. A revelation that had somewhat appeared in his experiences with Chomei, but, hadn't had the time to set in until now.
    
    Yes, perhaps the work he did continued to bear no fruit. Yes, perhaps it would take him even longer to scale the mountains of might the upper echelon of the universe have attained since his time gone. 

    But it was better to work in hopes of something changing than believing nothing can.

    Making mental note to thank Chomei later for helping to plant the seeds of change that now bloomed with Jackie's continued care, Dion took a shaky breath to try and recompose himself, wiping the tears that had formed in his eyes as he managed a quavery smile, saying in a reassuring voice, "H-how's that one saying go?... Never underestimate the indomitable human spirit, right? Your people were never made for combat like ours, and yet, you persist through it..."

    "...Guess that's one of the things that rubbed off on me all those years on Earth, that unyielding attitude."

    "Y-you're right, though, Jackie. About everything. I-I guess it's, just hard to try and bounce back when life's been doing everything to keep me down, you know? It's been a neverending march to the top since day one..."

    A tired sigh left the young man's lips as the weight of a lifetime spent reaching for something beyond his set station in life exuded itself onto his shoulders. 
    
    "But, who better to keep going then than me, ain't that the philosophy then?"

    Taking another sip of his drink, Dion reached out toward Jackie, patting her gently on the hand that had released her own drink as he said, "I'm real sorry for what you've had to go through, Jackie. I, I didn't mean to reopen old wounds the way that I have. Guess I forgot somewhere along the way that suffering's a universal tragedy, not just localized to my sorry ass."

    Sitting there for a few moments in silent contemplation, Dion eventually peeped up again, asking Jackie with a renewed vigor to his words in an attempt to lighten the mood, "Still, better than you? That'll be a tough bargain to make, y-you're pretty amazing, and I'm just me, haha."

    "Though, if what you say is true, then maybe with a little elbow grease and a lotta hope, I could start to climb that mountain."

    "...Maybe, you could help me start climbing?"

    "Can't expect everyone to know it, but you can at least hope that they work to understand it."

    Dion's gaze reflected a contemplative, near-nostalgic look as the words left the bartender's mouth. His mind drifted to fond memories of his forged friendship with the only daughter of House Bloodthorne- their kindred relationship acting as the prime example of his spoken statement to this day. Even if he couldn't ever know the pain that came with losing pupil after pupil to the threats that she worked to prepare them for, he could at least try to understand it as best as he could, so that he could strive to help her to the best of his ability. 

    The bartender only hoped that he wasn't acting overly intrusive with his actions. While well-meaning, Dion knew there was a fine line that he was currently treading with Jackie and talking about their shared strifes in life. Thankfully, it appeared that the Saiyan hadn't crossed it yet, seeing as Jackie remained in relatively calm (and hopefully comforted) spirits following his prior affirmations. 

    Spirits that aimed to only brighten up as the conversation went on, Dion's own mood lightening from the happier outlook that Jackie now maintained as she took another drink from her root beer, finding amusement with his insistence on the hardiness of her proud human race. Laughing a bit, the Saiyan took a swig of his own drink, nodding as he replied in a matter-of-fact tone, "Yeah, trust me, I can tell-! Don't think it even takes a Ki-sensor to be able to see you've carved yourself a form fit for battle, haha- I-if that's not weird at all to say! Y-you look great!"

    Smooth. Just as smooth as the drinks he served people.

    Gaining a more formal air to him once the two drifted to slightly more serious talking topics again, a much more sheepish grin appeared on the young man's face- boyish charm shining through as he combed through his bangs with a single, shaky hand, saying in a bit of an embarrassed voice, "I-I know it seems sudden, a-and awfully timed considering what we just talked about, b-but like you said... We've both got too much riding on us now to not pull out all the stops we have at our disposal. Super Saiyans, demons, weird science experiments- trust me, they exist, I've seen them myself- the world's much too unsure to not do something to prepare for what might come next."

    Eyebrows raising slightly at the Kami clanging her emptied bottle back down to the bar counter, Dion couldn't deny the surprise that now lingered on his face. Training? Now? This late into the evening? He wasn't even in his training gi! Not that he had one anyways, but, still!

    Even so, the opportunity to train with a fighter as skilled as Jackie was an opportunity he couldn't afford to pass up. Nodding his head, Dion held up a single finger once more, making his way back to the kitchen staff again. 

    After several more minutes, Dion walked out with a cylinder styrofoam container. Setting it down in front of the flame-haired femme fatale, the bartender gestured toward it with a reinvigorated smile, saying as he placed next to it a plastic spoon, "Don't think I forgot about your order, Jackie! What kind of entrepreneur would I be if I did? And, oh-"

     Reaching behind him, Dion pulled from his back pockets two large water bottles. 

    "I, also remember you asking initially for water. And instead I got you root beer. I'm, a little stupid for that, eheh. But since it looks like we'll be spending a bit more time together before the night is over, I got us some refreshments for the road!"

    "Don't worry about the staff or the business either, they owe me a few favors anyways, I can cut work early for something of this magnitude."

    Waiting for Jackie to presumably take her stew and bottle of water, Dion then hopped over the counter with an excited flourish, gesturing toward the door as he said with a child-like enthusiasm, "Well, while the night is still young, howsabout we get a move on?"

    Once the two were out the door, Dion would heave a heavy, but relieved sigh, staring upwards at the starry night above as he asked Jackie, "So, er, if you don't mind me asking- what's on the agenda for tonight's session then? I, um, haven't been formally taught in a while, s-so I'm, going into this blind, so to speak, eheh.."

    If Dion had a nickel for every time he was refused information about what a training session with a mentor figure was going to entail, he'd have two nickels. Which isn't much, but he found it odd that it's happened twice. The first time was with Nero, back within the safe and secluded wooded walls of the Berri Forest. It was simultaneously the first time the two got to have some one-on-one time, and thus an opportunity to get to know each other on an intimate, personal level. Their friendship forged itself on that very day, and Dion couldn't help but smile as he was reminded of that once more peaceful time between the two.

    How did things ever go so wrong? 

    Shaking himself, Dion refused to go down the rabbit hole of despair again. Not after Jackie had given him so much to hope toward, even without having taught him anything yet. He had too much to keep fighting for, too much to allow the fear of penalty for his actions to take over anew. Instead, Dion focused on the future unfolding right in front of him, hopping right up into the night sky behind the enthused Earthling to the shock and awe of the originally profane and vulgar mercenaries that dotted the streets around them. 

    With a wide smile on his face, the Saiyan had never felt so free up in the clouds in a long, long time- the night air brisking his bangs back and tickling at his nose as he followed close behind Jackie's flight path, hopping down a few yards away from where the chocolate-complexioned Kami positioned herself. 

    Eyeing her as she began to wolf down her food, his concern with her enjoyment of the soup was thrown out the window once the proposition of a spar was spoken about. Eyes widening, Dion pointed toward himself, and then at Jackie as he said in a bit of a wavery voice, "M-me? S-spar you? M-Ms. Jackie, while I realize you aren't the type to bully me, I-I'm afraid I might not be the fittest Saiyan at the moment to-"

    Stopping himself, Dion slapped himself on the forehead. The whole reasoning behind his hesitancy was precisely why the two were out here in the first place! Shaking his head at his own stupidity, the Saiyan took a calming inhale- arms set at his side with their fists clenched as he began to focus.
    
    If Jackie wanted a display of power, Dion would do his best to give it to her.

    White aura flaring out around his person, Dion channeled his Ki throughout his entire body, the massive focusing of power eventually exploding outwards in a brilliant pillar of blue and white combined- piercing the night sky above in a column of luminescent blues and silvers. 

    A mighty shout echoed from the young man's lips, causing the entire light show to dissipate, leaving only Dion in its wake- his full strength (or what he perceived to be the entirety of it) fully harnessed.

    "Well Jackie, this is me at my current full power," The battle-ready bartender announced, his true strength still somewhat capped by both mental and physical inability to use it all. 
    
    "It ain't much, but, it's more than what I ever thought was possible, at least."

    With that, Dion slipped into a more traditional Karate stance- legs spread apart to provide a nice, stable base for fluid footwork and his hands lowered to encourage the more flowy fighting style that came with a Karate/kickboxing fighting style. 
    
    "I'm ready when you are."

    The night breeze flowed cooly through the young Saiyan's sleek, jet-black hair. Tousling Dion's bangs to and fro' as he watched Jackie with a critically calculative gaze. Every twitch, every spasm, every movement taken in by the Saiyan's watchful eyes. Which included the little magic trick the mystically inclined martial artist pulled by yoinking a rag from seemingly out of nowhere- something that, funnily enough, didn't really surprise him all that much. Nero talked to rocks the first time they trained with each other, so, it wasn't like magic was a foreign topic to him. 

    His eyes did widen slightly in surprise when he was offered to take the first step in this tango of theirs. Dion wasn't used to being the one to make the first move- usually he was the one on the receiving end of an instigating attack, and so being put in the hot seat so to speak in regards to fuel the fire right from the get go was something he wasn't very familiar with.
    
    Hesitancy evident through his contemplative expression, Dion appeared to be freezing a bit- truly clueless as to how to optimally start this battle off correctly. The fear of making what one could consider a wrong move starting to swallow him whole all over again, until...
    
    'Don't make me shove a spine in there, Hofferson, grow one yourself. Cause you deserve it.'

    Exhaling as the words of encouragement from his childhood friend rang throughout his mind, Dion suddenly found his footing- digging his heels a little deeper in the dirt below as his eyes focused on his sparring partner before him. 
    
    "Right."

    Lowering himself slightly, posture bending forwards as though preparing to take off for a marathon run- Dion burst forward at a blisteringly fast pace, one that would be somewhat surprising for someone of his caliber of strength and technical experience. While incredibly linear, and thus most likely very easily readable for any experienced martial artist, such a tick was exactly what he was hoping Jackie would pick up on.

    Utilizing Jackie's lack of knowledge of his fighting style to try and bait her into believing he was more green than he actually let on, Dion made it look as though he was aiming for a straight-on barrage of punches and kicks- when in all actuality, he aimed to use the momentum for something much more permanent and a lot less frivolous. 
    
    Stopping just in front of where Jackie stood, Dion planted his feet into the ground once more, shifting his hips into the front kick he now loaded his weight into- Throwing it straight at the fiery haired fighter's midsection. However, if she expected to block what looked to be a decently powerful body shot, she was sorrily mistaken. 

    Halfway through the front kick, Dion quickly brought his knee upwards- pivoting his front foot in order to open up his hips further for added flexibility. Mid-move, Dion redirected the shot so that instead of the midsection, the ball of his foot would hopefully make solid contact with Jackie's presumably wide-open jaw. The snap of his leg akin to that of a whip, and sounding much like one as the air around them crackled from the sheer speed of the singular, and surprisingly smooth motion.
