Ayu is... Small. Despite her age, she's barely reaching four feet, and her frame is thin and petite. What's there more to say? Just a regular little girl from the forest's outskirts, living her life peacefully in a boring neighborhood. Despite her ordinary posture, she's quite fit thanks to running around the forests all day but there's nothing extraordinary to that. The only eye-catching detail in her appearance is that she's green - quite literally - with her skin having the hue of powder green and hair as verdant as leaves of the vine. Said hair that adorns her head is thick, dark green in color, messy and shiny, almost like it's mimicking the appearance of long leaves. The very long locks are usually tied in two braids that reach past her waist. Such is the nature of her hair, that every time she cuts them, they regrow to the same exact length in a matter of hours. Quite distressing, to say the least.
The leafy bangs cover her eyebrows and thick strands of green obscure Ayu's face. She got a heart-shaped face with gentle, sweet-looking facial features – a small nose, soft pinkish lips, and big eyes with opalescent, pale yellow irises. But the devil is in the details, isn't it? A pretty little mouth hides small fangs sharper than any human teeth. Both her tongue and her blood got the same dark rose color. That's also the reason for when Ayu blushes, her cheeks are not red, but raspberry pink - and the truth is - she blushes often.
There are more details in her appearance that distinguish Ayu from a regular human. Aside from fangs and her unusual greenish complexion, she got white nails and she has a pair of pointy ears. The tips don't match human or Namekian standards, they are exactly in between those two shapes - but Ayu hides her ears under her long hair. Her eyes seem to lack pupils, yet it does not affect her vision at all. Lastly, she has those specific rings around her wrists and ankles, the same color as her skin. They seem to be naturally carved into her body, but she covers them under her clothing, tying ribbons or wrappings around them. It all might not be too much judging by the appearance of other races, but Ayu herself is quite uneasy about her physique. If she'd only know, what she is exactly, right..?
BACKGROUND
Ayu was born as a regular human. That's it, no superpowers, no mystery, no specific connections. With a different name and appearance, she lived on Earth with her family, a younger sibling, and both loving parents... It used to be like that. Peaceful life. Right..? Well, she does not remember it anymore, her memories were wiped clean. But can anyone say for certain that they memorized every waking moment of their lives?
There was a nasty car crash, an unavoidable collision that took three lives – her younger brother and both parents died, leaving a little girl barely at age of five struggling to survive. She was rushed to the nearest hospital and taken care of, but despite the medical workers' efforts and dedication, there wasn't much they could do. Slowly but surely, death crept at her bed, waiting for her last breath. The advanced technology at this place could not restore failing organs and damaged brain core, leaving a little child in a coma and filling her last hours with quiet somberness. The little one was beyond saving, but... One quirky doctor, an older lady named Williams took a very odd interest in the poor girl. Checking on her every few hours, reading the survey results, and trying her best to ease the pain. Little patient was her perfect candidate... Very young, stubbornly holding on to her last spark of life. Her body was still developing, so it could be altered, right..? The girl had no other family and even if by some miracle she'd get back to health, no one was waiting for her at home. Ideal circumstances right there. That's why after one phone call Williams smuggled her out that very evening, announcing her death – no one at the hospital was surprised by it, really... The fake doll was placed in the mortuary, some documents adjusted and rewritten, and she suddenly was dead for the whole wide world. The hospital's staff knew she was going to die anyway, so everything was resolved very quickly.
Truth is her barely alive body was stolen and put in the little, private laboratory of the unusual duo of scientists - to be experimented on. Not for a vile reason, but for nothing good either. It was the partnership between two genius minds, curious about the unknown, using their knowledge and experience for things not exactly... Ethical. Opinions may vary, of course. They wanted to try saving the girl's life, by any means necessary – yet, her life itself wasn't a priority. Just the sole process was interesting to them. Why? For the sake of knowledge, that's why. And for the simple verification if they truly can bring someone back from the brink of forthcoming death.
Genetics engineer, Zhang Yibai took the project into his own hands, as he was the originator of the whole plan. Jane Williams, his faithful partner monitored the patient's life signs, like brain activity and the work of organs. Gradually, but surely the scientists modified the girl's genes. Her human body was a base. She was to be fused with sets of different DNAs, whose samples weren't obtained legally nor easily but were chosen because of their properties. Among others, there were pieces known for their regenerative factors, for the race's innate affiliation to magic, and the list goes on... It was an experiment after all, so the main reasoning behind the selection was simply to check if anything would work at all. Even if there was no guarantee that his method would succeed, Zhang worked diligently - the whole process was very slow. It took a year to cell by cell and piece by piece modify a human body like that. The scientists sought the solution and answer, for the first year biologically re-engineering the girl's body, and taking another year just to stabilize her organism. The whole time the little patient was in an induced coma. Her brain functions, her organs, and her muscles were constantly kept in check until she'd be ready to leave the laboratory. Everything indicated that whatever Zhang and Williams were doing, it was working. The girl's organism was slowly regenerating itself. Her appearance changed gradually as the new, altered genetic structure of her body became more stable. And finally, she was all set to be woken up, an experiment deemed a fruitful success.
But, originally, the child did not have any purpose after the procedure... She was never meant to be a weapon nor anything more than a being able to regenerate itself. The idea was to put the girl up for adoption and monitor her health, yet, for obvious reasons watching over her from afar would be a difficult thing. Scientists were wondering - what kind of powers would she develop? Would her altered genes grant her unusual abilities? Or, perhaps, what if her cells would start breaking down one day? What if there be any complications? They had quite high hopes for her. Williams persuaded Yibai to take care of the little one and after lots of nagging, he agreed. Not giving up on his projects and work, he, a fifty-old cranky genetic genius, moved to a small house on the outskirts of the Korin Forest, away from curious eyes. With his adoptive granddaughter of course. He changed his job to a genetics lecturer in the Biology Department at East City University, working in his private laboratory whenever he had a chance. The little, green-skinned girl woke up soon after.
She was named Kagyuu Yibai.
It took Ayu some time to understand her circumstances. She soon learned that she was taken in and adopted by Zhang after her parents died in the accident, which was explained to her at least... But that's all she ever knew. The little girl couldn't recall anything else, not even her own name or family's faces. Who was she? Why was she green? What race did she belong to? Her memories were a blank page, which was blamed on the brain trauma after the car crash. It shouldn't be strange that a seven-year-old child couldn't recall anything under this condition. Nothing about bioengineering, nor about her being an unusual bio-android was ever brought up either - but when there's an unspoken matter in the household, it tends to weigh heavily on those it involves.
So many questions weren't answered and it seemed that it would stay this way... Living with her grandfather wasn't an easy task either. Ayu had to make peace with her new life, and grumpy, always busy Zhang wasn't the supportive type... But he watched over her. He was helpful, yet not exactly warm and welcoming... So, despite all, he was caring, right? Well... She wasn't sure. Zhang was coming home very late and leaving early, meals were provided by the school that Ayu attended, though she had to get used to getting back to an empty house every day. During weekends grandfather would order some meals and would stay in his room, working and reading so Ayu never dared to bother him. There was no one else there... All in all, life was pretty uneventful in the small house in the forest but peaceful.
And yet, the little girl felt incredibly lonely. Without any memories of her past, she had nothing to cling to or to dream about, missing parents whose names she couldn't even recall. Zhang was always busy and she didn't have any friends - at school she was a bit of an oddball, shyly looking down at her shoes and not being able to introduce herself. Other kids weren't interested in playing with someone who couldn't mutter a word without stuttering, some started picking on her. As much as she liked learning, staying at school was always making her uneasy. Turned out that Ayu was a very shy child, and with a lack of parental love and guidance, she was quickly developing anxiety. She found that speaking to others started to frighten her to her core so... She stopped. A mental blockage forced her voice back to her throat even when she wanted to talk to others, anxiety wasn't allowing her to. The ones who were able to hear her whisper were the plants she tended to behind her house or on school grounds. Her soft voice was locked away from everyone else.
Ayu was aware that she was different, that she wasn't exactly human - but there was no one to confide in. Not like she'd be able to... Small school on the outskirts, her home and garden, forests, fields, and a few charming villages around the area, that was her whole world. Was she an unknown alien that arrived on Earth years ago with her family? Or some unidentified hybrid? She didn't know and couldn't ask anyone.
Unknowingly to her, Doctor Yibai was watching her very carefully through the first months of her new life. Things weren't unrevealing as the project he created years ago intended. Ayu did heal when she was in a coma, placed in a genetic tank - even now she showed some degree of possessing a healing factor, but that was all. She didn't develop regeneration better than the Namekian race, she didn't show any ability to control her Ki or magic... There was nothing remarkable about her academic skills, intellect, or physical prowess. It turned out that she was a regular little girl that possessed some regenerative abilities - but in Zhang's eyes that was it. Nothing there was worth bragging about or researching further so the project succeeded only partially. Williams only contacted him through the phone, busy with other work, and it seemed they both came to a similar conclusion. Everything pointed out that they did save Ayu from the brink of death - but only that. She was just a slightly more durable human... So Zhang lost interest in this side project of his.
With her grandfather absent and not paying attention to her even if he was back home, Ayu found some comfort in nearby forests. She disliked crowds, didn't get along with kids at school, and was anxious around people in general, so she felt at ease in the woods. No one was there, only animals and trees, oh and so many flowers... Talking to plants was something she always did - so should she be surprised to find out that they began answering her words? Away from Zhang's eyes, Ayu realized she could make the plants grow, and that she understands them. Soon enough it turned out that she possessed different abilities... But she couldn't share this knowledge, her worries, or her observations with anyone. There were so many questions stirring in her green-haired head... And she could only silently ponder about them.
Only time would tell what would become of her.
