Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Years of captivity had meant the social and political moving’s of Namek had left Shakuhachi behind. When he had left the capital things weren’t so bad. Sure there were a few foreigners who had set up shop and put their noses where they didn’t belong, but for the most part Dend Capital still acted as a sacred ground where the Dragon, Warrior and even Mazoku clan could come together as family. But times where changing faster than ever now; what was once a few aliens scattered thing had now evolved into fully grown ethnoburbs. Some of the people here didn’t even bother to learn the language it seemed.
Walking through the merchant district revealed all too many of these kind, speaking some mumbo-jumbo that felt like a knives on a chalk board to his fine-tuned Namekian ears. But he wasn’t in town to buy anything; no he had come for the distasteful art of politics. The grand leader of the Namekian people, better known as Guru had passed away in his time gone from his people and now it was time for the difficult process of choosing a new leader. In normal times the chosen successor of Guru would be easily elected to lead; it was a simple process and generally speaking the Guru was pretty good when it came to making that sort of decision.
But the past Guru had left his people without making a proper decision; so what now? Now it was up to the meek and unwilling elders to make a decision. Of course they were afraid of choosing anyone at all; the decision of going along with whoever Guru wanted was so easy and pain free. Now they were the ones who had to make the choice. Who was going to be the one to lead the Namekian people forward? Who was fit for the job? Thankfully for them there was no shortage of choices. The passing of a Guru without a clear heir was quite a rare occasion and there were plenty of young and ambitious Namekians who were happy to put their name in the hate and try to take advantage.
Several such Nameks were in the village center making their cases. There were the warriors who proposed more fighting, more hunting and more breeding for the armies. There were the Dragons who spoke sooth songs of spirit and mind; expositing their relationship with Guru and Porunga and the importance of all such things to being a leader. You had a few merchants signally out how important trade had become to the new Namekian economy; promoting the immigration of more foreigners to increase production and bring even more goods to and from the planet. The elders sat back and listened to them all.
“You are all fine young Namekians and, uh, we’ve enjoyed listening to you all speak. For now we are all a bit tired and we will have to rest now. To all those who wish to speak and make your case known we shall listen to the others tomorrow and the day after that and of course beyond until we’ve heard you all speak and we are ready to make a decision.” To Shakuhachi it sounded like they were just delaying their decision. If they thought they were going to elect something better than what they had already they were mistaken. For now though Shakuhachi was going to mingle around the crowd and try to get a feel for where the mood was at.
