Tracking criminals down for bounty money was a close second to winning a semi-legal tournament in Ara's favorite methods of earning Zeni. However, it was becoming increasingly more difficult to get to her targets before anyone else did. Her last two attempts ended in a sore disappointment - the lawbreaker was already snatched by a member of something called the Bounty Hunters' Association way before she even got there. It seemed that this organization provided its affiliates with strategic support, enabling them to locate the felons before any independent hunter could. Of course, such assistance would require a fee, likely a significant percentage of the reward money. But that would be an acceptable alternative to not getting any reward whatsoever. Hence, Ara applied to join. The response was not one she had hoped for; her 'credentials' were enough for the association to give her a trial period, but she would have to carry out her first mission while being supervised by someone 'more experienced'. Which sounded a lot like having a boss - something she had avoided with every career choice she made, valuing her freedom over potentially higher income. Hopefully, this would really just be a one-time thing, and the old-timer assigned to babysit her wouldn't be too overbearing.
The assignment was, thankfully, a lucrative one. She got a lot more details than she did on most of her freelance gigs, too. And the task was more complicated than just swooping in and punching someone unconscious - was it selected to test out her adaptability? The target was a smuggler by the name of Rudder, along with all the members of his crew - at least six of them, though possibly more. The tricky part was the requirement to first catch them in the act of loading illicit items onboard - obtaining photographs, and preferable capturing the whole cargo without it being damaged. Having most of the coast guard and customs personnel in his pocket, Rudder was technically 'clean'. Ara would need to follow the ship out of the port, keeping a safe distance, and sneak up to it when it was docked at one of the small islands some miles off the Yahhoy coast, with the crew loading crates onboard. For that reason she had a compact waterproof camera hanging on a string around her neck as she sat on the flat edge of a tall building's roof, watching the ship through a pair of night-vision binoculars. There was movement on it, people carrying out last minute preparations before setting sail. She counted seven in total, and figured more might be in the lower decks.
She pressed a button on her earpiece. "Target acquired, I'm ready to follow them," she spoke quietly, struggling to sound professional. "Still waiting for my supervisor to show up." Ara ended the communication before murmuring under her breath: "Could do with some punctuality." She put the binoculars to her eyes again.
