The weekend had gone by rather slowly for Celeste. Truly it was something she normally would have relished, given she had anything of merit for entertainment. A robbery here, a casual bribery or blackmail there, some sojourns in the local parks and markets, even the fleeting fancy of pretending to be some poor saps’ detached girlfriend. None of it seemed to provide as much of a thrill nor intrigue as any of their initial conceptions in her mind prior to the enactment. There was something to be desired of her time, this world, and the Accords which seemed to be sweeping it like an out-of-control flame.
So, what else was she to do to cure this boredom?
Celeste found the answer in donning the guise of a bachelorette, out for brunch and a morning of casual eavesdropping on other local patrons on the sun deck of a popular bistro. Only the waiter paid the lady the in the white sun hat, and peach spring dress any mind; the others far too caught up in their business meetings, and gossip to worry about the lone lady enjoying chai to herself. Nothing of interest beyond capitalistic acquisitions, or what Becky was wearing to the Spring Fling in three weeks.
Nothing until, a curious pair of college lovers took the table next to the witch. Her attention perked keenly at the mention of a thesis, something about extraterrestrials, and a site being watched heavily by the government.
The location itself had been marked for weeks, deemed a hazard site by the right people involved with such speculative observation. Very hush hush apparently, even the intricacies of it all were very vague. It was a rather intriguing bit of news to travel through the respective grapevines, certainly considering how the rumors themselves portrayed the event in of itself. Unidentified flying objects, or UFO as the commoners took with their fancy of abbreviation, causing wildfire and earthquakes in the wilderness. Talk of a secret war, supermen, and explosions in the forest also surrounded these events.
The whole notion was admirable in its absurdity.
To think some uncharted species or lifeform had taken to crashing upon this miserable rock in all the cosmos, was a bit unheard of. Even more so the other rumor, that experiments were being performed on the farm folk out in these parts. Though even with everything Celeste had encountered thus far in her travels, it wasn’t anything to put passed the realm of impossibility. She had seen strange things out among the Wastes before, and the farmers she recalled weren’t particularly bright either. So, naturally – she just had to see the locale for herself, to possibly sate that ever-ravenous curiosity.
It was somewhere beyond the place where she had first met Rinako; a day's worth or so of kilometers from that dreadful little village. They arrived by hover-limousine, the witch retaining her disguise, and the few men in suits with semi-automatic weapons that accompanied ‘The Bachelorette.’ The witch stepped out of the car to remove the large sunglasses from the emerald greens which hid behind them. She took in the devastation of the ruins which had ravaged the earth beneath them, and all the beauty in which they held. Another hover-vehicle would arrive moments after, spilling forth a slew of scientists which began to set out to conduct a variety of tests. The elegant woman would call out to them with satirical concern.
