For some Christmas had been a time to relax and spend time with family, not so for the people roped into watching over a certain blob for the season. For Cassie it had been a time when everyone put up pretty lights and other shiny baubles for her to poke away and and occasionally crunch down on like an apple. (She had since learned they weren't actually food after the first five or so.)
Other than that she was oblivious to the fact anything was different about today, for example the fact that someone had spent months missing her dearly and was in the process of sending people to look for her? Completely unaware. That same person was little more than a distant but not disliked memory of hers.
Actually that was wrong, there was something different about today. You see after a week proving she could "behave" (not running between people's legs and tripping them over, not greeting people by tackling them to the ground or otherwise jumping on them without permission, asking before putting something in her mouth, not trying to open doors or crawl into vents if someone wasn't watching, etc) she'd be allowed to go outside.
For anyone else that wouldn't be a big achievement, but when you were dealing with a creature that could go from stationary to shooting itself across a football pitch in the blink of an eye, certain precautions needed to be taken. The only way she was allowed to roam freely was the aforementioned good behaviour and the fact the campus was relatively devoid of people given the season.
Cassie was loving every moment however, she currently had access to a nice area of greenery that was usually reserved for students to relax during break. She was bounding across, eating grass and all the actually fun stuff. Of course this was all under the watchful eye of a few members of staff, probably all under the employment of the schooling district's science department in some way, them being the most informed of the quirks of Cassie's existence and who had also effectively been turned into a rotating cast of babysitters while actual lab research into her "species" was going on in the background.
Eventually bored of the monotony of bouncing through grass and scaring off birds Cassie had the bright idea to spice things up by crawling into a bush. It was a genius plan, the people out there were just standing around doing nothing, they must have been so bored.
But if she disappeared then they'd have to come over and look for her... and when they did she'd jump out and surprise them!
This would've been a genius plan had they not clearly seen her enter the bush and had she not been wriggling around, shaking the leaves about.
To their credit they were debating amongst themselves who should go over and indulge her for the time being. It was just no one was particularly keen to get tackled should Cassie get overexcited.
