CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
APPEARANCE: At a glance, Caraway seems to be a relatively normal adult human girl. Her skin is a slightly paled cream tone, unmarred by any imperfection. A set of round, sunken amethyst eyes stare out from beneath stray bangs. She sports a short-cropped hairstyle parted two ways above her head, with the upper fluff colored a honeyed orange and the bottom roots tinged with a deep brown hue. Trimmed lacquered nails painted near the same color as her eyes help accentuate her hands. Caraway sports an extremely modest bust and curvature, being called "flat" by some.
While Caraway can cycle through outfits as most humans do, she prefers to keep her favorite set, only needing cleaning or repairs from outside stimuli. She typically dons: A pair of basic, small, silvery magnetic loop earnings. A pinkish bandage strung across her nose's bridge. Cyan wired earbuds, which slip into her top shirt and hook into a pants pocket. A black choker adorned with a simple silver arrow. A skintight long-sleeved undershirt, black in coloration with thin white lines running across it. A more oversized baggy white short-sleeved midriff white shirt with a blurb of text that says "THE INTERNET". Ripped blue jeans. And finally, purple hi-top shoes.
BACKGROUND: When looking at Caraway, a pseudo-goth tomboy and one of many young adults living in the big city, one might assume her story is relatively simple. Buried beneath this simple facade is a tale far more bloated and complex than most beings a century-old had. To put it in layman's terms, she is a half-blooded noble heiress to a Greater Demon that had once been lured and seduced by a now presumably deceased mother and had been fighting against her father's influence ever since.
Two wrongs don't make a right, yet it seems that Caraway's birth was an exceedingly odd exception to the rule. Her nameless mother was a bitter woman with a dark heart. An average human who had taken one too many falls and had decided to get abstract revenge against society. Turning to mysticism as an easy avenue to power, Paprika delved into the dark arts in an enraged attempt to enact her plots. While everyday magics could require months if not years of strict practice and a pinch of natural talent, drawing power from existing entities was a much riskier but ultimately appetizing shortcut. And a shortcut Paprika found indeed. Eligor, a Demon of noble blood and no stranger to acting as a patron. Gaining power herself would never be enough. The human knew that even with the whimsically gifted strength she had now, it would pale in comparison to a spellcaster of natural talent. As partial payment for their pact and machinations of Paprika's own, the two engaged in a rather promiscuous but ultimately non-romantic relationship that resulted in a pregnancy.
Eligor was no fool and knew what the human had wanted. Yet to him, there was no reason to not play along. After all, he had been searching for a worthy heir of great power to one day take his place, half-blood or not. So with both parents interested in their growing daughter for selfish purposes, Caraway's life seemed set to be miserable from birth. It was a plain rainy day in an unremarkable hospital. There was no magical terror, no demonic signs, simply a baby birthed to a woman crying crocodile tears of joy. Paprika and Eligor both smiled that day, though not for their new daughter, but rather the spike of power that indicated the infant had precisely what they desired. A newborn with a power level nearing that of a fully grown adult. When Caraway's purple eyes first opened to the world around her, there was no malice. The profound, pure innocence of a child despite the horrible pair who had conspired to create her.
Paprika raised her normally at first. Abuse and direct coercion would get nowhere, so she thought. Her child must be taught the vile ways of humanity and the society they had built through encouragement and experience. Eligor watched over his offspring from the shadows; a young Caraway was told that her birth father was an ordinary man who had been falsely imprisoned and killed. Friends were permitted, but Paprika always found a way to manipulate the situation to her twisted agenda. Blaming them for wrongdoings, painting anyone else who came near here as monsters only wanting to hurt. Caraway was afraid. She didn't understand why all these bad things were happening to her. She COULDN'T understand the strange feelings in her body, the bursts of purple-wreathed darkness that could destroy whenever she felt upset.
Most children would trust their parents unconditionally, but Caraway was different. Her mother's constant venom-laced sweet-smelling words didn't sit right. She didn't BELIEVE all of the lies and manipulation. Caraway did not just silently reject this dogma; she refused to even entertain the notion that LIFE as a whole could be so inherently evil. However unintentional it may or may not have been, this shrewdness impressed Eligor. Not only was his daughter powerful, but she was brilliant. On a whim, he terminated the dark pact with Paprika, reducing the corrupted woman to ash as a horrified Caraway witnessed it. While gruesome for a pre-teen child, her father finally revealing himself to her lifted a proverbial weight from the girl's shoulders. While still irrefutably evil in the end, Eligor was less vengeance and more cold professionalism. He ruled a realm with an iron fist and expected a prodigal heir to do the same.
Caraway denied him the same way she had rejected her mother, insistent on living her own life. Eligor was nonplussed, unsurprised by her rejection. 'Given time,' he had said, 'All good men turn to darkness.' Centuries-old, the rebellious whims of a barely ten-year-old child hardly phased the Demon. With enough temptation and time, she would fall. Caraway filtered into the orphan system, flitting from family to family as she grew. While there was never a true sense of love among them, the girl hardly complained as slightly inattentive human fosters were still leagues better than wicked Demons.
