CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
APPEARANCE
BACKGROUND: Growing up in the shadow of one of Otherworld's foremost Ghost Hunters was not the easiest experience for Daruma. It hadn't helped that Daruma had chosen to ignore the family business and become a magician like his mother before him. When you read the word magician, you probably think of stage magic, rabbits and hats, and all that. In the Otherworld, this is a very different occupation. The term in the living world might be miracle-worker. Somebody who uses the complicated, mystical and unpredictable forces of the universe to solve problems. His mother had been the local magician for thirty three years before she got sick.
Daruma had been fifteen when she passed away. He took it upon himself in his grief to become a magician no matter what.
Eventually, he scored himself an apprenticeship under the head magician for the Furnace of the Eight Divisions - the gateway between the living world and the next. It was an intense five years. He scrubbed floors until he learned to animate the brushes to scrub on his behalf. He fanned the flames until he learned to conjure great bellows to do it with five times the magnitude. He even, begrudgingly, captured a few runaway spirits in great iron cages and locks he pulled from the heat and the magic in the air. His master, known affectionately as the Wakai-Rōkun (Young Elderly Lord), was a stern teacher who helped him grow. Daruma had even seen that one day, he could replace him as head magician for the Furnace.
But that's all behind him now.
You see, the problem with working somewhere every day that had an endless amount of uncharted and time-space stretched halls was that often times you either found yourself lost accidentally, or wandered into something strange on purpose. One of those times, though he doesn't quite remember whether he had done it out of boredom or accidentally, he found himself in a strange room. Seven orbs, carved to perfect spheres in stone and warming the room like a radiator, sat in the center of a dimly lit chamber. Strange writings he didn't recognize were around the chamber walls, and without thinking - like the dunderhead he is - he had crossed the threshold and completed some kind of ritual.
A bolt of lightning struck down through the ceiling, a beam of dusty light in it's wake as the orbs began to split, spewing churning smoke from each seam that formed. In a flash of light and with a shattering sound, the orbs gave way to a strange form of life. Shadow Dragons, a type of magical being formed only from the failures in the creation of, or by the overuse of an ancient kind of relic known as Dragon Balls. The dragons scattered, fleeing the chambers and racketeering down the halls until they could be heard no longer. When the dust settled, there was a single dragon left. Pint sized, with an eye of stone with a single star engraved on it's face, the little red lizard looked up at Daruma.
And that's how Daruma met his best friend, and began their search for the six others of his kind.
