This takes your defense action on the turn it is initiated but not the turn it is fired, provided they are different turns. On the turn it is fired you do not generate MP from the technique.

Maker's Mark (Max Power) got an errata
[SPT] Maker's Mark At the point of creation, each weapon was given a unique mark. A symbol bearing the regard of The Smith. In this mark lies vestiges of power that only draw forth in moments of desperation. When tapped into, little changed visually across the instrument, but the weight of the souls within are more manifest than ever before, creating a palpable disparity in how the instrument may feel to those around it.
Maker's Mark must be your post's first action and requires at least 1 MP to activate. While active; it empowers your Techniques by +10% and drains 1MP at the start of each turn, you cannot naturally gain MP unless specified by a trait, you can't block escapes, use Evasive or Escape techniques, or defend others. It can only be deactivated as the last action on a post BUT only on your next post or later. If you hit 0 MP for any reason, Maker's Mark ends immediately and you gain the Winded status effect.
WINDED [DEBUFF] When applied, you are unable to gain Momentum Points (MP) on your current turn or the following turn.
Full Sauce Clause: In addition, Max Power no longer drains momentum, instead you can gain up to 1 MP naturally per turn, and you may intercept attacks that target others.

Cores ALIEN PROWESS Extraterrestrial: Twice per thread, you may add a sparking variant to a non-sparking technique. Preparation or Expansion added this way reduce the technique's initial power by -20%. Techniques cannot have more than two variants at a time. Variant Booster requires the accompanying Standard Variant as per regular technique rules but gain a +10% bonus to its initial power.
ALIEN STURDINESS Hardy: Your total HP threshold is increased by +60%. Critical Damage will still defeat you at its normal rate. Wounds only reduce your HP threshold by -50% instead of -100%.
Optional GALAXY BRAIN You may use up to three Defense Actions OR Attack Actions in a single post. This is thrice per thread, and is only usable on Standard Techniques.

If she acts quickly, Portobello can take advantage of this trait and send the cloud along with her next attack to give it more of a kick.
Went through her techs and I think this is the only one that absolutely needs to be changed as Careful no longer exists as a variant so it is being swapped out.
